Chapter 76 - The Betrayal at Lisbon Pier

As they prepared to move out through the underground tunnel leading toward the cliffside lighthouse, Caleb's thoughts flashed back to twelve years ago—to Lisbon, Portugal, where this nightmare had begun.

He remembered the sun-drenched cobblestones of the Alfama district, the quiet afternoon his mother had supposedly boarded the luxury yacht *Sovereign Horizon* for a private cruise across the Atlantic. That night, a fiery blast on the horizon had illuminated the Portuguese coastline. The authorities had recovered floating debris, scorched life jackets, and a falsified coroner's report.

Now, the missing pieces formed a grotesque picture of betrayal.

The consortium—an alliance of corrupt Wall Street financiers and European shipping magnates—had bribed Eleanor’s primary admirals. They had believed Eleanor was naive, an aging widow easily discarded once her son was isolated. But Eleanor had seen the trap months in advance. She had used their greed against them, staging her own funeral to take the true wealth and naval prototypes beneath the sea, into the unmapped trenches where no satellite could track her.

"They thought she was dead, so they targeted Elizabeth," Caleb whispered as he checked the sight on his carbine. "When Caleb Vance married Elizabeth, the consortium thought they had an angle to infiltrate the estate. But Elizabeth turned out to be Eleanor’s chosen protégé."

"She protected your name for twelve years from the shadows," Evelyn said, strapping on a tactical vest over her dark sweater. "And when the time came, Elizabeth sacrificed herself so those four innocent children would bring the final keys back home to you."

"We owe them both our lives," Caleb said grimly. "And we are going to repay that debt tonight."

They reached the heavy iron grate that opened into the subterranean maintenance tunnel leading toward the coastal bluffs. Caleb entered the six-digit code into the keypad. The heavy iron door swung open with a dull thud.

The cold ocean wind immediately rushed into the tunnel, carrying the sharp scent of brine, pine needles, and the distinct, unmistakable odor of burning cordite.

The assault on Sycamore Lane had begun.
