Chapter 39 - The Retribution of Sycamore Lane

By 4:00 AM, the harbor was clear of the phantom freighter, which was being towed under armed federal escort toward the naval drydocks in Milwaukee.
The four children were still peacefully asleep upstairs, oblivious to the storm that had raged outside their bedroom windows. Caleb crept into their room, gently pulling the comforter over Leo and kissing little Maya on the forehead. She stirred slightly, clutching her favorite stuffed bear, before drifting back into a deep, innocent sleep.
Caleb walked out into the corridor, feeling a profound sense of protective resolve. He had saved his children. Chloe was gone, her parental rights completely severed and signed away under federal witnesses. The Montgomerys were crushed. Alistair was headed for a federal supermax facility.
He descended to the kitchen, where Arthur was brewing a pot of strong black coffee. The aroma filled the warm, rustic kitchen, contrasting sharply with the cold fog lingering outside.
"Drink," Arthur said, sliding a thick ceramic mug across the granite counter to Caleb. "You have a full day ahead of you."
"What's our next move, Dad?" Caleb asked, taking a sip of the steaming brew. "If this Damian Sterling is holding debt covenants against us, how do we counter him?"
Arthur pulled out an old leather-bound ledger from the cabinet. "Damian Sterling operates out of the shadows. He relies on municipal corruption, proxy investors, and predatory lending. But he has one massive vulnerability: he cannot enforce any debt covenant against the Vance estate without proving that Sycamore Lane is in financial default."
"And we are not in default," Caleb stated firmly.
"Far from it," Arthur smiled, his old vitality returning to his eyes. "With Chloe's maternal claims severed, the full inheritance tax shelter kicks in automatically under state statute 14. We now hold clear, unencumbered title to all six hundred acres of the bluffs, the harbor basin, and the commercial port rights. We don't just own the house, Caleb. We own the deepwater gateway to the entire county."
Suddenly, the heavy iron knocker on the front door echoed through the quiet house.
Caleb and Arthur exchanged a swift glance.
Arthur reached into the kitchen drawer, palming a compact automatic, while Caleb walked briskly to the foyer and checked the security monitor.
Standing on the front porch under the amber carriage light was not an armed mercenary or a federal marshal.
It was a woman in an impeccably tailored navy suit, holding a sleek leather briefcase. She looked no older than thirty-five, with sharp, intelligent dark eyes and an air of unmistakable legal authority. Behind her parked a single black town car with official diplomatic plates.
Caleb unlocked the deadbolt and pulled open the heavy door.
"Caleb Vance?" the woman inquired, her tone crisp and professional.
"I am. Who are you?"
May you like
She extended a polished hand. "My name is Evelyn Cross. I am the Senior Legal Counsel for the International Maritime Trust in Geneva. And I am here on behalf of Eleanor Vance's secret testamentary trust."
