Chapter 38 - The Trap Springs Shut

Federal Agent Marcus Miller, a tall man with a scarred jaw and a badge pinned to his tactical vest, stepped into the grand foyer. He nodded respectfully toward Arthur Vance.

"Admiral Vance. We received the Hague distress ping exactly eight minutes ago. The deep trench has been cordoned off. Our boarding teams have already secured the bridge and engine room of the cargo ship."

"Good work, Marcus," Arthur nodded. "The primary suspect is Alistair Sterling, wanted on three international warrants for sovereign bond forgery and maritime fraud."

Agent Miller turned to Alistair, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "Alistair Sterling. Step forward and turn around."

Alistair stood rigid. The aristocratic poise he had maintained for decades seemed to crack, revealing the bitter, aging fugitive underneath. He looked at Caleb, his gray eyes burning with venom.

"You think this is over, boy?" Alistair rasped as Miller clamped the steel cuffs around his wrists. "You think securing Sycamore Lane makes you safe? You have no idea what was on that ship."

Caleb stepped closer, his gaze unyielding. "Your ship is impounded, Alistair. Your mercenaries are disarmed. Your money is frozen. There is nothing left."

Alistair let out a sharp, ragged laugh that echoed off the high limestone ceiling. "My ship? That vessel wasn't carrying weapons or gold, Caleb. She was carrying the liquidation containers from the Montgomery offshore trust. And do you know who purchased those debt covenants before Julian went down?"

Caleb’s brow furrowed. "Julian Montgomery is in a federal holding cell."

"Julian is," Alistair whispered, leaning in as Miller pulled him toward the door. "But his silent partner—the man who bought out the European syndicate in Zurich forty-eight hours ago—is already holding the primary lien against the Vance name. You defeated the pawns, Caleb. But the master of the syndicate has just landed his private jet at the regional airfield."

Miller pulled Alistair out the door into the flashing blue lights of the courtyard, leaving Arthur and Caleb standing alone in the grand hallway.

The silence returned to Harbor House, heavy with unanswered questions.

Caleb turned to his father. "Dad... what was he talking about? What silent partner?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the grand fireplace, looking at the family portrait of Eleanor and their children hanging above the mantle. His face looked older, etched with a deep weariness that even the victory over Alistair couldn't erase.

"Eleanor had a first cousin," Arthur said quietly. "A man who went to Geneva fifty years ago and never came back. Damian Sterling. If Damian has acquired Montgomery's debt covenants... then this wasn't a family feud, Caleb. This was a hostile corporate takeover of our family's entire heritage."
