Chapter 62 - The Sovereign Bloodline

The carbon-hulled behemoth sat low in the ocean like a predatory leviathan, pushing walls of black brine against the hull of the Vance flagship. Through the high-powered binoculars, Evelyn watched a steel gangway extend from the behemoth’s dorsal deck. A retinue of armed operatives in pressure suits formed an honor guard, snapping to attention as a solitary figure stepped out into the biting wind.
She wore a long, charcoal cashmere overcoat lined with white mink, carrying an ivory-topped walking cane that mirrored Eleanor Vance’s signature style down to the silver engraving. But while Eleanor’s face in old family portraits had carried the warm, protective strength of a matriarch, this woman’s face was chiseled from arctic stone.
"Elizabeth Vance," Caleb muttered, his jaw set in a hard, grim line. "She looks like a ghost raised from forty years of salt and spite."
"Don't let her posture deceive you, Caleb," Evelyn said, pulling her four children into the shelter of the reinforced wheelhouse and locking the secondary titanium deadbolts. "A woman who lives forty years under the ocean doesn't come to the surface for a family reunion. She came to claim what she believes was stolen from her: the children, the deeds, and the bloodline."
A high-frequency signal hijacked the flagship's bridge speakers with an ear-piercing squawk.
"Marcus," the woman's voice echoed through the metal corridors, rich and venomous. "You look frail, old man. Did you really think hiding behind my sister’s pampered son would save you from the ledger of 1984? You built your glittering fortress in Riverside Hills with my sovereign gold. And now, you offer me the ashes of Drake’s failure?"
Marcus stepped to the microphone, his hands trembling with age, but his spine straightening. "Elizabeth, the war ended when Eleanor passed. The Vance lineage belongs to Caleb and his children. They have done no wrong to you. Take your black fleet and vanish back into the shadows."
A cold, mocking chuckle vibrated through the speakers. "My dear, pathetic brother-in-law. The Vance lineage belongs to whoever holds the Sovereign Genesis Key. Eleanor hid it in the duffel bag she sent with Evelyn twelve years ago. Tell me, Evelyn... did you honestly believe that duffel bag only contained birth certificates and Portuguese land titles?"
Evelyn felt a shockwave ripple through her chest. Her thoughts flashed back to the day she had fled Terminal West, hauling two battered suitcases and the heavy green duffel bag with her four young children clinging to her coat. She had guarded that bag through sieges, ambushes, and corporate betrayals, believing it was simply her children's salvation.

"The bottom lining," Evelyn whispered, realizing the horrifying truth.
"Precisely," Elizabeth’s voice purred. "Eleanor was a sentimental thief. She took the Genesis Key—the cryptographic codes that control every deep-sea mineral pipeline and secret sovereign reserve from Lisbon to Singapore—and sewed it into the fabric of that pathetic refugee bag. Hand over the duffel bag and the four heirs, Caleb, or I will drag your flagship into the Puerto Rico Trench before sunrise."
