Chapter 27 - The Secret in the Duffel

Ethan’s eyes widened with sudden remembrance. "Because she didn't pack the duffel bag! Nana did!"
Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. He turned to me, a brilliant, blazing spark returning to his weathered eyes. "Evelyn packed it."
Evelyn Vance—Arthur’s late wife, the true soul of the harbor estate, who had passed away two years prior. Before she died, she had handled every single piece of family estate planning, knowing better than anyone how greedy and ruthless her brother-in-law Julian and her daughter-in-law Chloe truly were.
"Where is the duffel bag now, Caleb?" Arthur demanded, his voice brimming with renewed energy.
"It’s in the attic storage closet," Caleb answered, already turning around and dashing through the house toward the stairs. "We unpacked the children’s clothes, but the heavy canvas bag was stuffed with old winter blankets and extra bedding. We never threw it out."
Within three minutes, Caleb was back on the porch, carrying the worn, navy-blue canvas duffel. He set it down on the teak patio table.
Arthur drew a small pocketknife from his vest and slit the inner nylon lining along the bottom seam. Beneath the padding, hidden inside a water-resistant vulcanized pouch, was a leather-bound journal and a notarized legal document bearing the official seal of the Cook County Probate Court.
Arthur opened the parchment and read the first paragraph. A slow, triumphant smile spread across his weathered face.
"What is it, Dad?" Caleb asked, holding his breath.
"It is Evelyn’s final codicil," Arthur said, his voice ringing with pure authority. "Signed, witnessed, and filed with the state supreme court eighteen months before Chloe ever set foot in this house. It states that any heir who voluntarily abandons direct physical custody of the fourth-generation descendants for more than forty-eight hours immediately forfeits all residual trust rights to the surviving caregiver."

Tori gasped. "The surviving caregiver..."
"Caleb," Arthur said, placing a heavy hand on his son’s shoulder. "And the four children. Chloe didn't inherit fifty-one percent of the harbor today. By abandoning them on this driveway, she unknowingly transferred one hundred percent of the Vance Trust into an irrevocable protective trust owned entirely by her four children, with Caleb as sole trustee."
