Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Horizon Beckons

Arthur stepped into the foyer, his eyes widening slightly as he recognized the seal embossed on Evelyn Cross’s leather briefcase.
"The Cross family," Arthur murmured. "Your father was Eleanor’s private barrister in Zurich."
"He was, Admiral Vance," Evelyn said, stepping inside as Caleb closed the door against the chill morning air. "And before my father passed, he gave me strict instructions: in the event that Alistair Sterling was apprehended and Chloe Vance was stripped of custodial standing, I was to deliver Eleanor’s true final testament directly into Caleb Vance’s hands."
Evelyn opened the briefcase and pulled out a heavy document sealed in crimson wax, bearing Eleanor’s personal signet ring imprint—an anchor intertwined with a wild rose.
"What is this, Miss Cross?" Caleb asked, his heart beating with renewed anticipation.
"This is the Sovereign Resolution," Evelyn explained, looking directly at Caleb. "When your mother married Arthur Vance, she knew the Sterling dynasty would eventually attempt to tear your family apart for control of the deepwater harbor. So she established a counter-trust. Every dividend, every sovereign bond, and every commercial lease from the Sterling maritime empire over the past thirty years has been quietly funneled into a blind offshore depository under your name, Caleb."
Caleb stared at the documents in stunned disbelief. "Under my name?"
"You are not in debt to Damian Sterling or anyone else," Evelyn revealed, a rare, warm smile softening her sharp features. "You are, in fact, the majority creditor of Damian Sterling’s holding company. He doesn't own your mortgage, Mr. Vance. You own his entire commercial fleet."
Arthur let out a deep, booming laugh—the first true laugh Caleb had heard from his father in months. "Eleanor... you brilliant, magnificent woman."
"However," Evelyn’s expression turned solemn as she slid a second, unsealed document across the table. "There is one condition your mother left behind. A condition that must be fulfilled before the sun rises over Harbor House today."
Caleb leaned over the table, his eyes scanning the final clause of his mother's testament.
The clause was handwritten in Eleanor’s elegant cursive:
*"The trust shall vest in Caleb Vance and his four children only upon the formal re-opening of the deepwater harbor to the Sovereign Atlantic Trade Route. But beware: the final cargo container left aboard the impounded ship does not belong to Alistair. It contains the missing ledger of 1974... and the identity of the person who betrayed our family forty years ago."*
Just as Caleb finished reading the sentence, Arthur’s satellite terminal in the study let out a loud, shrill alarm.
Caleb and Arthur rushed into the room.
The screen flashed red. The automated sensors at the impounded ship down at the military dock were registering an internal power surge from the cargo hold. A remote detonation sequence had just been initialized on the sealed container, set to trigger in exactly forty-five minutes.
Below the timer, a live video feed clicked on, showing a masked figure standing inside the dark cargo bay holding a detonator in one hand and a single, ancient family diary in the other.
The figure leaned toward the camera lens, and a chillingly familiar voice whispered across the speaker:
May you like
*"Did you really think Alistair was the only one who came back from the dead, Caleb?"*
Caleb’s eyes narrowed into slits of cold steel as the countdown ticked down: *00:44:59...*
