Chapter 43 - Into the Steel Belly

Inside the freighter, the air smelled of stale brine, diesel exhaust, and burning electrical insulation. The main corridors were completely dark, save for the rhythmic strobe of an emergency beacon far down the centerline corridor.
Caleb moved swiftly, keeping his back against the damp steel bulkheads, his footsteps silenced by his boots. His senses were tuned to every hum of the hull. As he approached the entrance to Cargo Bay Three, he spotted a tripwire strung three inches off the diamond-plate deck, glinting beneath the faint red emergency lighting.
He stepped over it cleanly, his heart hammering against his ribs. *Julian set this up in a hurry,* Caleb deduced. *He’s prepared for an assault, but he didn't expect someone who knows Eleanor’s floor plans.*
The vast cavern of Hold Three opened before him. In the center of the subterranean hold sat a solitary, matte-black shipping container. It wasn't standard commercial steel; it was military-grade composite, bolted directly to the ship’s primary structural keel.
Mounted above the container’s pneumatic seal was an electronic countdown module.
*00:14:02... 00:14:01...*
"You always did have your mother’s stubborn streak, nephew," a raspy, modulated voice crackled through the overhead PA system.
Caleb raised his weapon, sweeping the shadows along the elevated catwalks thirty feet above the hold floor. "Come down, Julian. Hiding behind remote detonators doesn't make you a ghost. It just makes you a coward."
A soft, cynical chuckle echoed across the girders. From the shadows of the upper crane platform, a man stepped onto the steel mesh. He pulled down the dark wool scarf covering his face, revealing weathered, deeply scarred features that shared an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to Arthur Vance—yet his eyes were poisoned with venom Arthur had never possessed.
"Coward?" Julian smiled, his yellowed teeth flashing in the red glow. "Your father lived in the sun, surrounded by Eleanor’s wealth, while I was discarded into the icy waters of the North Sea to take the blame for the Sterling fraud. Eleanor didn't build that empire on virtue, Caleb. She built it on leverage. And that container holds the one ledger that proves it."
"She protected Arthur," Caleb replied steadily, keeping his eyes on Julian’s hands. "And she protected me. The trust vests in my children tonight. Step down and deactivate the timer."

"It's too late for legalities," Julian snarled, his hand revealing a secondary transmitter button. "When this hold ignites, forty years of Vance family pride drowns under forty fathoms of salt water—and my partners in Geneva take what’s left."
