Chapter 55 - The Infiltration of Riverside Hills

By noon, a blinding rainstorm battered the East Coast, providing perfect operational cover.

Caleb did not take the armored convoy. Instead, he utilized the subterranean maintenance tunnel constructed beneath Harbor House that connected directly to the old municipal drainage aqueduct—a relic of the Vance industrial era. Thirty minutes later, disguised in a utility worker's oilskin coat and driving an unmarked municipal van, Caleb pulled onto Sycamore Lane.

The street was deceptively quiet. Two surveillance vans with tinted windows and diplomatic plates were parked two blocks down, monitoring the front approach. But Eleanor Vance had built Sycamore Lane with five escape routes and zero blind spots.

Caleb slipped through the overgrown laurel hedge behind the property, unlocked the rear basement cellar door with his master bypass key, and entered the house.

The house smelled of old cedar, dry paper, and the lingering phantom of childhood chaos from when the four children had first been deposited in the living room. Everything appeared untouched since the police audit weeks ago.

Caleb moved silently into the foyer where the towering grandfather clock stood against the wallpapered wall. It was an antique German timepiece from the nineteenth century, its pendulum motionless.

Caleb knelt before the lower housing, inserted Leo’s triangular silver key into a concealed aperture behind the carved wooden scrollwork, and turned it counterclockwise.

A sharp, metallic *clack* echoed through the quiet house.

The entire six-foot clock face swung forward on heavy, greased steel hinges, revealing a vertical concrete shaft bored directly into the bedrock beneath the foundation. A reinforced iron ladder extended down into the dark.

Caleb clicked on his tactical flashlight and descended twenty feet below the floorboards.

At the bottom of the shaft was a vault room no larger than a maritime shipping container. It wasn't filled with gold or cash.

The walls were lined with floor-to-ceiling server racks, continuously humming on an independent geothermal power loop. And in the center of the room sat a massive wooden drafting table covered in hand-drawn nautical maps, maritime blueprints, and the complete structural schematics of the mega-vessel *Leviathan*.

Caleb stepped up to the table, his breath catching in his throat.

Pinned to the center of the blueprint was a handwritten note from Eleanor in her sharp, commanding script:

*"The Leviathan was built in our Gdańsk shipyard in 1982, Caleb. Drake thinks he owns her. But I personally oversaw the installation of her sea-chests and ballast valves. She doesn't belong to Lucian Drake.*

*She is a floating guillotine. And here is how you pull the lever."*
