Chapter 42 - The Forty-Minute Perimeter

The black armored SUV tore through the heavy mist hanging over the coastal highway, its twin turbos whining as Caleb pushed the needle past ninety. Beside him in the passenger seat, Evelyn Cross tapped furiously on a encrypted government tablet, bypassing port security protocols in real time.

"Timer is at thirty-one minutes," Evelyn reported without looking up. "Damian Sterling’s legal team just filed an emergency injunction in federal district court to seal Dock 9 permanently under maritime quarantine. If we don’t breach the dock gates before that order is signed at dawn, we won’t just be trespassers—we’ll be classified as domestic saboteurs."

"Let them sign it," Caleb growled, his jaw set like granite. "Damian doesn't own those docks anymore. You proved it half an hour ago: I am the majority creditor."

As the high chain-link fences and towering floodlight towers of the naval terminal loomed out of the fog, three private security cruisers bearing the Sterling Maritime crest swung across the two-lane access road, forming a jagged roadblock. Armed guards in tactical windbreakers stood beside the vehicles, weapons drawn, hands raised to signal a halt.

Caleb didn't tap the brakes. Instead, he slammed his foot into the floorboard.

"Caleb!" Evelyn gasped, gripping the dashboard handle.

"Hold on," he said calmly.

The reinforced steel bull-bar of the SUV slammed directly into the rear quarter-panel of the lead cruiser. Metal screamed against metal; tempered glass exploded into harmless gravel as the interceptor vehicle was violently shoved aside, spinning into the drainage ditch. The remaining guards scrambled backward into the gravel, firing two panicked shots into the air, but Caleb had already cleared the chokepoint, speeding down the concrete apron toward the colossal hull of the impounded freighter.

The ship, christened the *Sovereign Dawn*, sat chained to heavy cast-iron bollards, its towering rust-streaked bow cutting into the dark sky like a monolith. High above the water line, steam hissed from a release valve near Cargo Hold Three.

Caleb killed the engine, grabbed his sidearm and the iron double-anchor key, and jumped down onto the damp tarmac.

"Twenty-two minutes, Caleb!" Evelyn called out from the vehicle, her eyes glued to the remote timer feed. "The local bomb squad is still fifteen minutes away! You have to cut the master relay yourself!"

"Keep the engine running, Evelyn," Caleb shouted over the roar of the incoming tide. "If that container goes, get to the children."

Without looking back, he sprinted up the gangway and vanished into the yawning steel maw of the ship.
