Chapter 60 - The Echo from the Depths

Dawn finally broke over the Atlantic horizon, painting the choppy waters in brilliant ribbons of gold, crimson, and amber.
The siege of Harbor House was over. The *Leviathan* was officially placed under federal impound, its predatory bulk escorted toward the Navy Yard by the triumphant armada of working-class tugboats and harbor cutters.
On the bluffs of Sycamore Lane, the storm clouds parted to reveal a pristine blue sky.
Evelyn stood on the wide terrace of Harbor House, wrapping a warm woolen shawl around little Maya's shoulders. Nearby, the three boys were running across the freshly dried lawn, laughing as the morning breeze carried away the bitter smell of rain and gunpowder. Leo stopped, looking up at the sky, before running over to give Evelyn a tight, silent hug.
Caleb stood beside them, holding Evelyn’s hand. For the first time in twelve years, the suffocating shadow of the Old World syndicate had been lifted. The Vance name was cleared. The fleet was safe. Their children were free.
"It’s over, Caleb," Evelyn murmured softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Eleanor’s war is finally won."
"Yes," Caleb said, feeling a rare, profound warmth settle in his chest. "Mom can finally rest."
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone in Caleb’s pocket vibrated with a sharp, violent sequence—a code that should have been permanently deactivated forty years ago.
Caleb pulled the phone out, his brow furrowing in confusion.
The screen displayed an untraceable deep-sea transponder frequency originating from the Mariana Trench.
He tapped the speaker button.
A crackle of deep-water oceanic static hissed through the phone. Then, through the white noise, came a voice.
It was not a man’s voice.
It was a woman’s voice—crisp, chillingly calm, and horrifyingly familiar. It sounded identical to Eleanor Vance, but younger, colder, and speaking in flawless Parisian French:
*"Caleb. Congratulations on neutralizing Drake. He was an arrogant fool who outlived his usefulness to our syndicate thirty years ago."*
Caleb froze, the blood draining instantly from his face. Evelyn gasped, her fingers digging painfully into Caleb’s arm.
*"Who is this?"* Caleb demanded, his voice shaking with sudden dread.
A low, haunting laugh echoed through the satellite speaker as the distant sound of submarine sonar pinged across the line:
May you like
*"Did you really think Eleanor was an only child, my dear nephew? Drake was only the distraction. The true Sovereign Fleet has just submerged off the Continental Shelf... and your real mother is coming home."*
The line went dead, leaving Caleb and Evelyn staring out into the vast, calm Atlantic, where the dark, terrifying depths held secrets yet untold.
