Chapter 57 - Breach on the Perimeter

The countdown was down to thirty-six hours.

Night fell violently over Harbor House. The storm that had battered the coast turned into an all-out Atlantic gale, whipping sixty-mile-per-hour winds against the bluff. White waves crashed like artillery against the rocky shore below.

Inside the compound, Caleb had returned from Sycamore Lane carrying the master blueprinted override codes. He sat at the command terminal in the lower library, calibrating the maritime frequencies, when the primary security console let out a high-pitched, dual-frequency alarm.

"Perimeter line three has been cut," Caleb’s head of private security announced over the comm-link. "North gate sensors are offline. We have multiple heat signatures advancing through the ravine!"

Drake was not waiting for the seventy-two hours.

The aristocratic lord had realized Evelyn’s economic blockade was tightening the noose around his mega-vessel. He was moving early to abduct Leo and force Caleb’s unconditional surrender before dawn.

"Lock the safe room bulkheads!" Caleb shouted, racking the bolt of a tactical carbine. "Engage the exterior halogen floodlights!"

Blinding white light exploded across the manicured lawns of Harbor House, cutting through the driving rain.

Emerging from the treeline were twelve black-clad operatives moving in diamond tactical formation, their suppressed submachine guns raised. These were not common harbor thugs like Julian’s men; these were Drake’s personal elite praetorians, trained in high-threat extraction.

"Fire!" Caleb commanded.

The estate's automated perimeter turrets opened up with a deafening staccato of non-lethal kinetic rounds and heavy suppressive fire, chewing up the turf and forcing the strike team behind the stone retaining walls.

Inside the subterranean shelter, Evelyn stood behind the children. Leo held a steel wrench he had pulled from the maintenance kit, his knuckles white, guarding his seven-year-old sister Maya.

"Stay down, sweetheart," Evelyn whispered, keeping her arm firmly across Maya’s shoulders, while her other hand gripped a heavy caliber revolver resting on the table.

Suddenly, a concussive blast blew the heavy iron hinges off the side terrace door. Shrapnel clattered against the armored glass.

Two Drake commandos breached the parlor, smoke billowing from their tactical grenades.

Caleb emerged from the hallway corner like a wraith, firing with surgical precision. The first operative dropped as a kinetic round struck his tactical plate, knocking the wind from his chest. The second operative lunged forward with a combat knife, his movement blindingly fast.

Caleb parried the blade with the stock of his rifle, drove his knee into the man's solar plexus, and slammed him hard against the oak wainscoting.

Before the operative could recover, a small, solid iron projectile struck him squarely in the temple, dropping him senseless to the hardwood.

Caleb spun around, startled.

Standing at the doorway of the inner hall was Leo, holding an antique brass ship’s compass he had hurled with pitch-perfect accuracy.

"I told you, Dad," Leo said, his chest heaving, his eyes blazing with absolute Vance defiance. "I'm not letting them take me."

Caleb looked at his son, a fierce surge of pride flooding his veins. "Good throw, son. Now get back behind the steel door. Dad’s going on the offensive."
