Chapter 73 - The Children's Bloodline

Above them, on the ground floor of the mansion, the floorboards creaked.

Caleb's head snapped up. "The kids."

Leaving the automated terminal running its diagnostic sweeps, Caleb and Evelyn sprinted up the private elevator. They emerged into the dimly lit hallway outside the north wing.

Standing barefoot on the polished oak floor was Leo, the eldest of the four children. He was only eleven years old, but his eyes carried an eerie, unblinking maturity that Caleb had seen only in his mother’s portrait. Clutched tightly in Leo’s small hand was the worn canvas strap of the olive-green duffel bag that Elizabeth had dropped on the doorstep weeks ago.

Behind Leo stood his three younger siblings—Maya, Lucas, and little Sophie—silent, wide-eyed, huddled together like soldiers waiting for orders.

"Leo," Evelyn said gently, lowering herself to one knee so she was at eye level with the boy. "Sweetheart, why are you out of bed? You should be resting."

"The music box woke us up, Aunt Evelyn," Leo said, his voice shockingly steady for a child his age. "Mom said that when the lullaby played through the walls, it meant Grandmother was coming home. And that I had to give Uncle Caleb the bottom zipper."

Caleb knelt beside Evelyn, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked at Leo, seeing the fierce, unwavering resolve that lived in the Vance bloodline.

"Leo... what did your mother tell you before she brought you here?" Caleb asked softly.

"She told me that Sycamore Lane was the only castle left standing," Leo whispered. "She told me that the people chasing us didn't want the money or the houses. They wanted us. Because our fingerprints are the only ones that can unlock the Sovereign Accord."

Leo placed the duffel bag on the floor between them. He reached his small hand into the outer pocket, pulling out a small, tarnished silver hairpin that belonged to his mother. With practiced precision, he inserted the pin into a tiny, concealed rivet near the base of the bag's strap.

A dull *click* echoed through the hallway.

The false bottom of the heavy canvas duffel released its magnetic catch. Caleb pulled back the reinforced nylon lining.

Inside rested four biometric transponder rings crafted from blackened titanium, four diplomatic passports issued by an unrecognized sovereign maritime principality, and a heavy, gold-plated key engraved with the crest of the Atlantic Fleet.

"These aren't just children, Caleb," Evelyn murmured, looking at the titanium rings in horror and realization. "Eleanor put the entire global shipping trust in their names. The four heirs to the Sovereign Accord. If the consortium gets hold of them..."

"They control every deep-water harbor from Rotterdam to New York," Caleb finished, his jaw clenched tight. "Elizabeth didn't run away from the marriage. She ran through gunfire to get these children behind my walls."

Just then, the mansion's exterior perimeter alarm gave a sharp, muted chirp.
