Chapter 46 - The Severed Wire

*Think,* Caleb ordered himself, his breath coming in short, controlled bursts. *What did Mother write in the margin of the trust document?*
*"The trust shall vest only upon the formal re-opening of the deepwater harbor to the Sovereign Atlantic Trade Route."*
The double anchor wasn't a standard lock; it was a nautical compass bearing. Arthur had mentioned that Eleanor navigated the Azores in 1974 by reversing the western declination.
Caleb gripped the key, pushed it inward against the spring tension, and turned it one hundred and eighty degrees counter-clockwise toward true North.

The heavy hydraulic bolts on the container disengaged with a concussive hiss of releasing pressure. The massive door swung open six inches.
Inside, bathed in the amber glow of a backup battery, sat a single steel safety box mounted above two blocks of industrial C4 explosive, wired to a digital trigger ticking down the final seconds:
*00:00:28... 00:00:27...*
Caleb grabbed the safety box handles, pulling it free from its mountings, but the ignition wires remained attached to the blast cap. There was no time to search for a pair of wire cutters.
Relying on sheer adrenaline, Caleb drove the heavy edge of the steel key down between the wire terminals, severing the ground wire against the copper baseplate.
The digital timer blinked: *00:00:04...*
Then went dark.
The deafening silence that followed was broken only by the lapping of the ocean against the hull and Caleb’s ragged breathing.
He opened the unlocked lid of the safety box. Inside lay an ancient, leather-bound volume wrapped in oilskin: the missing 1974 Sovereign Ledger, along with a stack of signed bearer shares stamped with the official insignia of the Atlantic Maritime Consortium.
Footsteps echoed along the gangway. Caleb raised his weapon instantly, but lowered it as Evelyn Cross appeared at the entrance of Hold Three, flanked by a squad of State Harbor Police officers in full tactical gear.
"Caleb!" Evelyn called out, her face pale, then softening with profound relief as she saw him standing unharmed beside the open container. "The port authority has confirmed it. Damian Sterling was just intercepted at the private airfield attempting to board a chartered flight to Zurich. He’s in custody."
Caleb tucked the leather ledger firmly under his arm. "Damian is finished. And so is Julian."
He looked up at the catwalk, where Julian sat slumped against the rail, staring down in defeated silence.

"Let’s go home, Evelyn," Caleb said quietly. "My children are waiting."
