Chapter 29 - The Fall of the Heiress

Sterling put on his reading glasses, turning the pages of Evelyn’s codicil with meticulous care. As he read the stamped county clerk certifications and the supreme court precedent attached, his eyebrows climbed higher and higher up his forehead.

Five agonizing minutes passed. The only sound in the room was the soft hum of the air conditioning and the rhythmic tapping of Chloe’s manicured nails on her marble desk in Monaco.

"Well, Sterling?" Chloe snapped. "Tell them to get out so we can begin the liquidation vote!"

Sterling took off his glasses, looked directly into the high-definition camera, and cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Montgomery-Vance," Sterling said in a dry, unimpressed tone. "Your petition for majority ownership is completely null and void."

Chloe froze. The champagne flute in her hand hovered an inch above the desk. "What? That’s impossible! I satisfied the ninety-day non-custodial clause!"

"You satisfied the clause, yes," Sterling replied, tapping the legal brief with his pen. "However, pursuant to the registered 2022 Codicil executed by Evelyn Vance, any invocation of abandonment clauses triggers an automatic, non-negotiable foreclosure of your maternal trust rights. As of six o'clock this morning, your shares were officially redistributed equally among Ethan, Maya, Leo, and Sophie Vance."

"That can't be real!" Chloe shrieked, standing up so violently that her crystal glass tipped over, spilling red wine across the white tablecloth. "They are minors! I am their mother! I control their trust!"

"Not according to this document," Caleb said, leaning forward into the microphone, his voice dripping with icy finality. "The codicil names me as sole fiduciary guardian until each child turns twenty-five. Furthermore, because you attempted to liquidate trust assets through an offshore entity linked to Julian Vance’s criminal sabotage, the board has just filed an international freezing order on all your European accounts."

The color drained from Chloe’s face until she was as white as the marble columns behind her. "Caleb... Caleb, wait! You can't do this to me! I gave birth to those children! I'm broke! My father lost everything yesterday!"

"You should have thought about that before you left them standing in the rain with two suitcases," Caleb said quietly. "Meeting adjourned."

Arthur pressed the remote control, and the massive television screen went black, cutting Chloe off in mid-scream.
