Chapter 24 - Blood and Leverage

The arrival of the state troopers threw Montgomery’s hired extraction team into immediate chaos. The contractors immediately dropped their tools and raised their hands, realizing that what they were told was an "informal family custody retrieval" had turned into an armed felony assault against a federally protected witness.

"Back off! I have diplomatic immunity pending through the Panamanian consulate!" Richard Montgomery screamed, backing toward his vehicle as the cruiser doors swung open.

Arthur Vance stepped out of the front passenger seat. He didn't look like an aging harbor patriarch; he looked like an avenging titan. He walked past the state troopers, who respectfully gave him room, his steel-gray eyes fixed on the man who had abandoned his grandchildren and then tried to steal them back as bargaining chips.

"You don't have immunity, Richard," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You have thirty-six counts of maritime fraud, wire tampering, and child endangerment."

"Those children are Montgomerys!" Richard shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Chloe left them with you as collateral! You owed me forty million dollars for the terminal expansion!"

At that moment, the front doors of Harbor House swung wide. Caleb walked out onto the porch, carrying four-year-old Leo in his left arm, while Ethan and Maya walked beside Tori, clutching her hands tightly.

Ethan stepped forward, staring directly at the grandfather he had only ever seen in glossy magazines and distant holiday cards.

"Our name isn't Montgomery," the ten-year-old said, his chin lifted high, his voice carrying the exact timber and pride of his father. "Our name is Vance. And we belong here."

Richard lunged forward in frustration, but a state trooper grabbed him by the shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him chest-first against the hood of his own Suburban. The crisp click of double-locking steel handcuffs sounded like the sweetest music across the lawn.

As Montgomery was read his Miranda rights, Arthur walked up the brick steps of the house. He reached out with hands that had worked steel and ships for fifty years and gently pulled Ethan, Maya, and Leo into a deep, protective embrace.

"The house is safe," Arthur whispered into Ethan’s hair. "The harbor is safe."

Yet even as the children buried their faces into their grandfather’s coat, Caleb caught my eye from across the porch. His phone was buzzing in his palm—a video call from an unlisted European number.
