Chapter 52 - The Sovereign Demand

Caleb did not lower his guard by a single millimeter. His thumb rested against the safety of the weapon hidden beneath his jacket, his boots anchored to the threshold.
"You’re trespassing on sovereign Vance soil, Drake," Caleb said, his voice cutting through the damp sea air like a knife. "My mother defeated your syndicate forty years ago. Julian Vance is currently sitting in federal lockup facing lifetime treason charges. Whatever game you’re playing, you’re four decades too late."
Lucian Drake chuckled, a sound like dry gravel shifting beneath a tide. He tilted his head, regarding Caleb with the condescending pity an emperor might afford an unruly provincial governor.
"Julian Vance?" Drake waved a dismissive, gloved hand. "Julian was an errand boy with an overinflated ego, Caleb. Your mother let Julian play with domestic shipping routes to keep him occupied while she buried the real ledger. Eleanor was brilliant, I grant her that. She spent forty years playing chess against the European board, hiding behind fake trusts and Lisbon apartments."
Drake stepped forward, stopping just an inch outside the doorway threshold, perfectly aware of the legal and physical boundaries of Harbor House.
"Julian thought he was fighting for harbor shares," Drake continued, his icy gray eyes drilling directly into Caleb’s soul. "He never knew the real debt. In 1974, Eleanor took two billion dollars in gold bullion from the Drake family vault to rebuild the American Atlantic Fleet after the collapse. She signed a bilateral blood covenant with me. If the debt was not paid within forty years upon the reopening of the Atlantic Trade Route, the Vance line would yield two things."
"My mother yielded nothing to parasites," Caleb growled.
"Clause Seven, Caleb," Drake replied softly, producing an antique leather folder stamped with Eleanor Vance’s original family crest. "The fleet returns to the Drake Sovereign Trust. And the firstborn male of the next generation—a child born of the pact’s lineage—is returned to the Old World to assume his true seat on the Grand Board."
Inside the darkened parlor, Evelyn stepped out from behind the partition, her eyes flashing with venomous fire.
"You sick, arrogant coward," Evelyn said, stepping up to Caleb’s side, her voice dripping with sheer venom. "You think you can sail an illegal floating fortress into New York Harbor, wave a piece of moldy parchment, and claim our son? Leo is Caleb’s boy. His birth certificate is filed under United States federal registry. You touch one hair on his head, Drake, and you won’t leave this bay alive."
Lucian Drake’s gaze shifted to Evelyn, his lips curling into a predatory smile.
"Ah, the fiercely protective mother-in-law who smuggled four children across international airspace in coach," Drake mused, examining her up and down. "Admirable courage, Mrs. Vance. But birth certificates are printed on paper. Blood is printed in the genetic record. Eleanor herself brought the infant to our clinic in Zurich twelve years ago to seal the biological registry. Did she never tell Caleb about the four months she spent in Switzerland before Leo was formally handed to him?"
Caleb’s stomach plummeted into an icy abyss. Twelve years ago, when Evelyn’s daughter had given birth amidst the chaotic fallout of their European exile, Eleanor had taken charge of the medical transfer in Zurich. Caleb had never questioned his mother. Eleanor had protected them with every breath she possessed.
Could Eleanor have hidden a dark, desperate pact to keep the rest of the family alive?

"Seventy-two hours, Caleb," Drake said quietly, tapping the walking cane against the granite steps. "I will anchor the *Leviathan* in international waters off the shelf. At midnight on the third day, you will bring Leo and the signed transfer deeds of the Atlantic fleet to my harbor tender. If you refuse, every commercial port from Halifax to Miami will be economically blockaded by tomorrow morning. Your banks will freeze. Your ships will be seized as collateral by the Geneva High Maritime Tribunal. And I will take the boy anyway."
Drake tipped his hat, gave a slow, mocking bow, and retreated into the waiting black sedan.
