Chapter 36 - Shadows in the Vault Room

Downstairs in the grand hall, the grandfather clock struck midnight with twelve resonant, chilling chimes.

Alistair stood in the center of the limestone foyer, his silver walking stick resting on the polished floor. Chloe sat crumpled in a high-backed leather chair, her mascara run down her cheeks, muttering incoherently to herself about how she only wanted her share of the divorce settlement.

The front heavy oak doors opened. Arthur and Caleb descended the curved staircase. Caleb carried the worn duffel bag in his left hand and the silver locket dangling from his fingers.

Alistair’s eyes gleamed with cold triumph. "A sensible decision, Arthur. Blood always yields to reality."

"The cipher is here, Alistair," Arthur said, stopping three paces away. "And the original birth certificates from the duffel bag are intact. But before we sign anything, Chloe has to sign her waiver of maternal rights in front of us."

Chloe looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "Caleb, no! You can't take away my rights to the kids!"

"You forfeited those rights the night you left them on the porch with two suitcases and ran to Monaco with Montgomery’s stolen money," Caleb retorted coldly, slamming a thick set of legal documents onto the hall table. "Sign the full custodial surrender, Chloe. Or Arthur hands the duffel’s corporate ledger directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and you spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud, child endangerment, and international money laundering."

Chloe’s hand trembled violently. She looked at Alistair, begging for support, but the old admiral didn't even glance her way.

"Sign it, girl," Alistair ordered flatly. "You are baggage. Your signature on the transfer is all I require."

Broken, weeping, and realizing she was entirely discarded by the monsters she had aligned herself with, Chloe grasped the heavy pen. With shaking fingers, she scrawled her signature across all four copies of the custody surrender.

Caleb immediately snatched the documents, checking every signature, before tucking them securely inside his coat pocket. The children were now legally, entirely, and permanently his. Chloe could never touch them again.

"Now," Alistair said, stepping forward with his hand outstretched. "Give me the locket."

Arthur held up the silver locket. "You want Eleanor’s legacy, Alistair? Take it."

Arthur tossed the locket.

Alistair caught it out of the air. He flipped open the silver casing, seeing the microscopic quartz wafer glowing beneath the chandelier light. A predatory grin split his withered face.

"Finally," Alistair breathed. "The Sterling line is restored."

"Look closer at the inscription around the rim, Alistair," Arthur said softly.

Alistair pulled a jeweler's loupe from his breast pocket and pressed it to his eye. He read the tiny micro-engraved lettering circling the quartz wafer.

His face drained of color.

*"Registered to the Sole Trustee: Maya Vance. Any unauthorized claim triggers immediate international seizure."*

"What is this?" Alistair snarled, looking up with sudden fury. "What game are you playing, Arthur?!"

May you like

"It's not a game, Alistair," Caleb said, stepping forward. "It's a trap."
