Chapter 44 - The Face Beneath the Cowl

"Geneva?" Caleb said, his voice flat, buying every fraction of a second as his peripheral vision tracked the access ladder behind Julian’s catwalk. "So Damian Sterling wasn't the architect after all. He was just the local attack dog."
"Damian is a pathetic worm who believed he was avenging his father," Julian scoffed, descending the steel steps slowly, keeping his distance. "He thought he could buy Sycamore Lane with forged mortgages and counterfeit promissory notes! But Damian never knew what was really inside your mother’s duffel bag."
Caleb’s pulse spiked. *The duffel bag.* The very bag his ex-wife had tossed onto his doorstep along with their four children when she abandoned them in the opening act of this nightmare.
"The duffel bag held my children's clothes," Caleb countered smoothly, though his mind raced.
"It held the microfiche deeds to the Atlantic shipping lanes!" Julian shouted, his control slipping, raw desperation bleeding into his voice. "Eleanor hid them in the lining before she died! She knew Arthur was too soft to protect them, so she orchestrated your entire downfall—your divorce, your bankruptcy, your isolation—forcing you into the corner where you would have to fight like a wolf to survive!"
Caleb felt a wave of icy shock wash over him. Eleanor had foreseen every move on the board. The abandonment by his former spouse hadn't been an accident of malice; it was the catalyst Eleanor had designed to place the children and the true instruments of power safely under Arthur and Caleb’s protection.
"She knew you would come here," Caleb realized softly. "She prepared for you."
"She failed!" Julian yelled, glancing at the counter: *00:06:48... 00:06:47...* "In six minutes, the composite charges on the hull breach the sea wall. The ship sinks right at the pier. The ledger turns to pulp. And without it, you cannot fulfill Clause Seven before sunrise!"
With a sudden burst of violence, Julian raised a submachine gun slung across his shoulder and aimed directly at Caleb’s chest.

Caleb didn't hesitate. He dropped low behind a stack of industrial crates as a hail of 9mm rounds peppered the metal framing, throwing showers of orange sparks into the dark.
