Chapter 19 - The Broken Seal

Sarah Miller’s trembling fingers broke the wax seal of the leather envelope. Inside lay the original birth certificate, signed by Claire Vance, accompanied by three hand-written letters sealed with blue ribbon, and the official legal decree bearing the seal of the probate court of Milwaukee.

Tears welled in Sarah's eyes as she read the fragile, yellowed pages—words written by a mother she had never known, expressing an unconditional, fierce love that had been stolen by tragedy.

"Why... why now?" Sarah asked, her voice cracking as she looked up at Arthur, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "Why after thirty years?"

"Because the records were illegally suppressed by Julian Vance to prevent Claire’s branch from ever claiming their rightful voice," Arthur answered, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. "We looked for you, Sarah. For three years, I tore apart adoption registries from Green Bay to Chicago. Julian’s shell companies paid off the county registrar to bury your file in the dead-record vault. We only uncovered the fraud four hours ago."

I placed the acceptance deed beside the letters, along with Marcus’s legal brief. "Julian is at this moment attempting to seize the port, Sarah. He tried to tear Caleb's children away from their father tonight. He tried to destroy everything your mother and Arthur's family built for this community. If you sign this acceptance of trust, you don't just reclaim your name. You break his power forever."

Sarah looked from the letters to the deed, then to the massive window overlooking the port basin. Outside, the first sliver of golden dawn was breaking over the horizon, illuminating the four massive container ships moored at the docks, their cranes standing tall like silent iron guardians.

She wiped her tears with the back of her sleeve, her jaw setting with the same stubborn, unshakeable Vance steel that I saw in Arthur every day.

"Give me the pen," Sarah said firmly.

She signed the document with a clean, deliberate stroke: *Sarah Claire Vance-Miller.*

At that exact moment, the office door was kicked open with an explosive crash.

Julian Vance stood in the doorway, clad in an immaculate cashmere coat, flanked by two private security contractors wielding automatic weapons. His face was twisted with aristocratic rage, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"Step away from that desk!" Julian snarled, his voice trembling with manic fury as he pulled a small chrome revolver from his coat pocket. "The caucus begins in fifteen minutes, Arthur! You will hand over that document, or none of you will ever leave this harbor alive!"

"It’s over, Julian," Arthur said, stepping directly in front of Sarah and me, shielding us with his massive frame. "The document was electronically transmitted to the clerk of the Seventh Circuit forty seconds ago. Sarah’s proxy is officially entered into the federal register. You own nothing."
