Chapter 58 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of the Milan Financial Exchange towered against the rain-swept night sky like an obsidian monolith. At nine o'clock, the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor was packed with nervous shareholders, international auditors, and high-priced corporate attorneys.
At the head of the long glass table sat Matthew Ross, looking smug and triumphant, flanked by Nicole’s father and a battery of attorneys holding the temporary injunction orders.
"As you can see, gentlemen," Matthew Ross proclaimed, tapping his gold fountain pen against the glass table, "the woman calling herself Francesca Rossi is nothing more than an opportunistic social climber who manipulated my nephew Jason Vance. With Jason currently incapacitated, this board has a fiduciary duty to transfer temporary operational authority to my consortium."
"That motion is out of order, Signor Ross," a voice echoed through the boardroom like a crack of thunder.
The double doors of the boardroom were thrown wide open.
I walked into the room, dressed in an immaculate ivory tailored suit, my head held high, my diamond earrings catching the sterile boardroom lights. Flanked on my left by Count Julian Rossi—whose presence alone caused three junior board members to visibly blanch—and on my right by Arthur Kingswood, I radiated absolute, uncontested dominance.
Matthew Ross froze, his smug expression shattering into a mask of pure venom. "You have no standing here, Francesca! The court injunction has frozen your voting shares!"
"The Italian court injunction froze the shares of *Francesca Vance*," I said calmly, taking my place at the vacant seat at the head of the table. "Fortunately for this company, those shares were formally transferred three hours ago to the Kingswood-Rossi Global Trust, ratified under the diplomatic seal of the Swiss Confederation and the International Criminal Court."
Arthur stepped forward, tossing a thick, red-bound dossier onto the center of the glass table with a resounding crash.
"Matthew," Arthur said, his voice cold and chillingly familiar. "It has been thirty years. You’ve aged terribly."
Matthew Ross’s face turned the color of ash. He gripped the edges of the table, his knuckles whitening, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he stared at Arthur as though looking at the devil himself. "K-Kingswood...? You're dead... you died in Boston!"
"I survived your fire, Matthew," Arthur replied with deadly calm. "Just as my daughter survived your nephew's pathetic attempts to destroy her spirit."
Julian stepped up beside me, placing a hand gently on the back of my chair, his gaze sweeping over the terrified board members. "Every offshore account registered under the Vance-Ross subsidiary in Grand Cayman has been seized by Interpol as of twenty minutes ago. Jason Vance has signed a full confession implicating Matthew Ross in corporate fraud, attempted murder, and illegal market manipulation."
Two Italian financial police officers, accompanied by federal prosecutors, walked through the open doors, their badges flashing in the harsh light.
"Matthew Ross," the lead prosecutor announced, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, and international securities fraud."
Matthew lunged forward, knocked over his leather chair, his face contorted in demonic rage as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "You think you've won, Francesca?! You think you can take everything my family built and walk away into the sunset with your Count?! You will never survive what is coming! You have no idea what my brother left behind!"

"Take him away," I commanded softly.
The police gripped Matthew’s arms, forcing him into handcuffs and dragging him out of the boardroom, his frantic screams echoing down the corridor until the heavy doors swung shut.
