Chapter 18 - An Unspoken Vow

Later that evening, after the gala concluded and the children were tucked into their beds in the private suite of the historic Villa Cora, Anna and Julian walked through the illuminated rose gardens overlooking the city.
The Duomo loomed in the distance, bathed in soft golden floodlights, a monument to human perseverance and unwavering vision.
Julian had removed his tuxedo jacket, draping it gently around Anna’s bare shoulders to shield her from the crisp midnight air. They walked in comfortable silence, their steps synchronized on the gravel path.
"You were extraordinary tonight, Francesca," Julian said softly, breaking the quiet. "Not just because of the architecture. But because of who you have become. You walk without hesitation. You speak without fear."
Anna stopped, leaning against the stone balustrade, looking up at him. "I could not have done it without the space you gave me to heal, Julian. Most men who offered help would have expected a price. They would have wanted to claim ownership of the woman they rescued."
Julian stepped closer, his gray eyes darkening with profound sincerity. "I never wanted to rescue you, Francesca. You never needed saving—you only needed someone to clear the rubble so you could rise. A queen does not belong to anyone. She rules beside an equal."
He reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, velvet box. Anna’s breath caught in her throat.
"I know what marriage meant to you in your past life," Julian said, his voice husky, laden with emotion he had held in check for over a year. "A contract of convenience. An arrangement where your identity was slowly erased. I will never ask you to be Mrs. Rossi. I will never ask you to change your name, your work, or your independence."
He opened the box. Inside lay an exquisite, antique sapphire ring, encircled by delicate diamonds designed in the shape of intertwining olive branches—an ancient Florentine symbol of peace, resilience, and unyielding devotion.
"This is not a cage, Francesca," Julian whispered, his hand gently trembling as he took hers. "This is an alliance. A promise that no matter how high you fly, you will always have a partner who stands with you, who protects your children as his own, and who will love you fiercely until his dying breath. Will you marry me?"
Tears gathered in Anna’s eyes, hot and luminous under the Florentine moon. Her heart, once shattered into a thousand jagged pieces on the floor of a Manhattan penthouse, swelled with an emotion so pure, so powerful, it rendered all her past suffering meaningless.

"Yes," Anna whispered, her voice steady and resolute. "Yes, Julian. A thousand times, yes."
