Chapter 11 - The Shadow on Lake Como

The gentle morning breeze carrying the scent of pine and wild jasmine swept across the sunlit terrace of Villa Bellinzona, but the tranquility was suddenly shattered by the sharp vibration of a smartphone resting on the wrought-iron table.
Anna felt Julian’s hand tighten protectively over hers for a fraction of a second before she pulled away to look at the screen. The number was unfamiliar, bearing an international code from New York. Normally, she let such calls go directly to voicemail, but an odd, intuitive dread tightened her throat.
She picked up the receiver and pressed it to her ear. "Pronto?"
"Anna."
The voice on the other end was dry, strained, and filled with an edge of quiet hysteria that she hadn't heard in over a year. It wasn't Jason. It was Eleanor Vance, Jason's mother—a woman who had spent eleven years treating Anna like an ambitious social climber unworthy of the Vance lineage.
"Eleanor," Anna replied, her voice cooling instantly into polite granite. Beside her, Julian observed her expression, his gray eyes narrowing with sharp attentiveness. Down on the lawn, the joyful shouts of Ethan and Sophie chasing Dante drifted up, a painful contrast to the cold air bleeding through the speaker. "I am surprised you have this private line."
"Jason is in the hospital, Anna," Eleanor said without preamble, her aristocratic composure cracking into venomous panic. "He collapsed in court yesterday during the final liquidation proceedings of Vance Enterprises. Cardiac distress brought on by severe stress and alcohol abuse. He's asking for you. He won't sign the transfer of the children's remaining trust funds unless you come back to Manhattan."
Anna closed her eyes, taking a deep breath of the Alpine air. She remembered the day she stood in the sleek marble foyer of their penthouse, watching Jason sneer as he handed her the divorce papers, gloating about Nicole's youth and the son he believed was his. He had discarded her and their children without a single backward glance, yet now, broken by bankruptcy and public disgrace, he was attempting to wield their children's financial security as emotional leverage.
"The trust funds are legally protected by the custody agreement finalized in Rome six months ago, Eleanor," Anna replied, each word measured and lethal. "If Jason refuses to cooperate with the trustees, my attorneys will file contempt of court before sundown. Do not call this number again."
"You selfish, vindictive woman!" Eleanor spat, her voice trembling. "Nicole took everything! She fled to the Caymans with over four million dollars she siphoned through dummy accounts before the fraud was uncovered. Jason has nothing left! He is your children's father!"
"He made his choice when he threw Ethan and Sophie aside for a fantasy built on vanity," Anna said softly. "I have built a new life, Eleanor. Tell Jason that whatever he has lost, he brought upon himself."
She ended the call and lowered the phone. A tremor ran through her fingers, not from fear, but from the sudden rush of old ghosts intruding upon the sanctuary she had bled to build.
Julian stepped closer, his warm hands gently cupping her shoulders. "What did they want, Francesca?"
Anna leaned slightly into his warmth, feeling the steady beat of his presence grounding her. "Jason is hospitalized. His mother expects me to play the dutiful martyr one last time. But worse, Julian... Nicole took millions. If she's hiding offshore, it means Jason's creditors are circling like vultures, and they will try to attach whatever assets are tied to Ethan and Sophie's names in New York."

Julian’s jaw tightened, the aristocratic calm in his face giving way to the razor-sharp brilliance of a man who commanded European commerce. "They will not touch a single euro of your children's future, Francesca. We take the morning flight to Zurich, meet with our offshore counsel, and sever every remaining legal tether Jason Vance holds over your family. Once and for all."
