Chapter 53 - The Broken Lineage

We moved to the library, where the crackling fire in the massive stone hearth did little to thaw the cold dread settling over the room. Arthur sat opposite Julian and me, having placed a leather-bound journal and a stack of notarized documents onto the mahogany table.
Julian had summoned his private intelligence team via an encrypted uplink; within minutes, satellite links verified the authentication of Arthur Kingswood’s diplomatic clearances, dental records, and the DNA profile transmitted directly from the Interpol forensic database in Lyon.
The match was definitive: 99.98% paternal probability.
I sank back into the velvet armchair, feeling the ground give way beneath my feet. For eleven years, I had believed that Jason Vance had chosen me out of love, that we were college sweethearts who built an empire together from scratch. When he threw me away for Nicole and their illicit child, I thought it was simple, sordid greed and lust.
"Jason knew," I whispered, the sickening realization dawning on me. "Jason always knew who I was."
Arthur bowed his silver head, his jaw clenching until the tendons stood out. "The Vance family never forgot the Kingswood patents, Francesca. When your mother fled to Boston and gave you the Rossi name, they lost track of you for nearly two decades. But when you entered Columbia University on an academic scholarship, Marcus Vance’s private investigators flagged your registration and mother's background."
"He groomed him," Julian murmured, his sharp eyes flashing with lethal clarity as he looked at me. "Marcus Vance deliberately placed his son in your path. The chance meeting in the university library, the whirlwind romance, the rapid wedding... it was never a marriage, Francesca. It was a hostile corporate takeover disguised as holy matrimony."
"They needed you to sign the merger documents once you turned thirty," Arthur explained, pushing a legal document across the table. "Under the original Kingswood-Vance charter, the forty-billion-dollar maritime and green-energy trust in Zurich could only be unlocked by a legitimate direct heir of the Kingswood bloodline. If you signed corporate assets over to Jason during your marriage, his family would assume permanent control of the entire trust."
Tears of sheer humiliation and rage burned behind my eyes. Eleven years. Eleven years of devotion, of cooking his dinners, of smoothing over his temper, of enduring his coldness, of crying myself to sleep wondering what I had done wrong to make him pull away from me.
I had not failed as a wife. I was simply a vault combination he had spent a decade attempting to crack.
"He discarded me because I hadn't signed the Zurich authorization," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He thought the post-nuptial agreements he tricked me into drafting would suffice, but the Swiss trustees rejected them."
"Precisely," Arthur said. "And when Nicole entered his life, he grew reckless. He believed he could bankrupt you, break your spirit, and force you to settle by relinquishing all rights to your mother's overseas estate. But he didn't count on your resilience. And he certainly didn't count on Count Julian Rossi stepping in to champion your cause."

Julian reached over, his warm, strong hand closing over mine. "He lost the war the moment he underestimated you, Francesca. But if Jason is offering confessions to Interpol tonight, he wants something in exchange."
"He wants his life," Arthur replied grimly. "Because the shadow syndicate behind Marcus Vance has just issued a execution order on Jason inside San Vittore prison."
