Chapter 12 - The Wolf at the Door

The private airstrip outside Zurich was shrouded in a thin veil of autumn mist when Julian’s Gulfstream touched down. Across the tarmac, waiting under the awning of an executive hangar, stood Marco Bellini, Julian’s chief legal strategist and one of the sharpest corporate litigators in Switzerland.

Inside the quiet conference room overlooking the snow-dusted runway, Marco spread a series of thick manila folders across the mahogany table.

"The situation in New York is more volatile than Eleanor Vance admitted," Marco began, pushing a set of financial affidavits toward Anna. "Nicole didn't just embezzle from Vance Enterprises. She forged Jason's signature on several mezzanine loans backed by private lenders—men whose backgrounds are significantly darker than Wall Street hedge funds."

Anna stared at the documents, her heart sinking. "Loan sharks?"

"High-yield shadow lenders," Julian corrected coldly, leaning over Anna's shoulder to examine the numbers. "Predators who lend to desperate executives on the brink of ruin. If Jason default on these notes—and he will, given his company's bankruptcy—these creditors will seek any asset where Jason's signature appears. Including the historic family trust set up for Ethan and Sophie before the divorce."

"That trust was created by my grandfather's estate," Anna said, her eyes flashing with fierce maternal fury. "Jason was merely an administrative co-signatory. He never contributed a single cent to it!"

"Under New York law, his signature gives them a colorable claim to tie it up in probate litigation for years," Marco explained grimly. "Unless we execute an immediate emergency receivership in a neutral jurisdiction. We need to petition the Supreme Court of New York for an injunction, but to do that effectively, we need Jason to relinquish his trusteeship willingly. Or prove he committed gross fiduciary negligence."

Suddenly, Anna’s tablet chimed with an incoming priority notification. It was a live feed from Manhattan financial news. The headline flashing in bold red letters across the screen made the blood drain from her face:

*FORMER ARCHITECTURAL MOGUL JASON VANCE DETAINED AT JFK AIRPORT ATTEMPTING TO BOARD PRIVATE FLIGHT TO SWITZERLAND.*

Anna gasped. "He was trying to come here?"

"Not just come here," Julian murmured, his gaze darkening as he pulled up an encrypted communication on his own phone. "Look at the flight manifest. Jason didn't buy that ticket. The ticket was issued by a shell company registered in Panama—the same company Nicole used to hide her stolen capital."

Anna looked at Julian in disbelief. "Jason and Nicole are still in contact? Even after she destroyed him?"

"Either they are colluding to raid the children's trust together," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register, "or Nicole has lured him into a trap to use him as a scapegoat. Either way, Francesca, the battle has come to our doorstep. We are going to New York."

"No," Anna said, standing tall, her spine straight as steel. "I spent eleven years hiding behind that man's shadow, letting him take credit for my designs, my instincts, and my dignity. If I return to New York, I will not return as a frightened ex-wife. I return as Francesca Moretti, principal architect of the Milan Syndicate. And I will burn his illusions to the ground."
