Chapter 27 - The Web of the Rossis

The departure of Vittorio and his sycophants marked the end of the board's rebellion, but the external legal battlefield was only intensifying.
Within forty-eight hours, the Milan Juvenile Court convened an extraordinary emergency hearing to address the competing claims for Aurelia’s custody. Jason Vance, despite the looming revocation of his bail in New York, had managed to retain an aggressive team of Milanese litigators who sought an immediate temporary injunction to remove Aurelia from Villa Rossi.
Outside the Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan, hundreds of reporters and photographers lined the grand stone steps. Flashbulbs erupted like machine gunfire as Julian’s armored Bentley pulled up to the curb.
Julian stepped out first, offering his hand to Francesca.
Francesca emerged into the blinding glare of the cameras looking regal, formidable, and entirely composed. She wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. She held Julian’s hand with unwavering confidence. They did not hide from the cameras; they did not shield their faces. They walked up the marble steps together, an unbroken united front.
Inside the closed courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Across the aisle sat Jason Vance’s legal team, headed by Avvocato Corbelli, a notorious Milanese courtroom shark. Sitting directly behind them—via an encrypted video monitor linking to a conference room in New York—was Jason Vance himself.
Through the high-definition screen, Jason looked gaunt, his eyes hollow with fury and desperation. When his gaze landed on Francesca, his mouth twisted into a snarl.
"Signori Giudici," Corbelli began, bowing grandly to the three presiding magistrates. "We are here today to right a grievous international wrong. Miss Nicole Laurent gave birth to this child while in an exclusive, acknowledged domestic relationship with my client, Mr. Jason Vance. Signora Francesca Moretti—Mr. Vance’s ex-wife—harbors deep, pathological personal vendettas against both the deceased mother and my client. To place this vulnerable toddler in the care of a woman whose marriage was ended by the child's very conception is psychological cruelty!"
The lead judge, a sharp-featured woman named Magistrate Bellini, peered over her spectacles. "Avvocato Corbelli, does your client possess an official birth certificate naming him as the biological father?"
"We are demanding an immediate court-ordered paternity test!" Corbelli shouted, waving his arms. "Under Italian law, the preservation of putative paternity takes precedence over an informal foreign will executed by an incarcerated convict!"
Magistrate Bellini turned her cool gaze to Francesca’s counsel, then directly to Francesca. "Signora Moretti. What say you?"
Francesca stood up. Her voice was steady, calm, and filled with the quiet power of undeniable truth.
"Your Honor," Francesca began, "Mr. Vance claims to seek the child out of paternal devotion. Yet, forty-eight hours before this hearing, Mr. Vance’s financial representatives approached Julian Rossi’s private office with an off-the-record offer: Mr. Vance offered to surrender all parental claims and withdraw all petitions in exchange for twenty million dollars in cash to satisfy his American bail bonds."
A murmur rippled through the courtroom.
Corbelli jumped to his feet, red-faced. "This is hearsay! Unsubstantiated slander!"
"It is not hearsay," Julian spoke up, rising beside Francesca. "The conversation was recorded in accordance with Lombardy commercial disclosure statutes, and the full transcript has been entered into evidence as Exhibit D."
Francesca continued, stepping toward the bench with measured grace. "Aurelia Laurent is not a financial commodity to be traded between bankrupt hedge-fund managers. Furthermore, the court does not need to order a paternity test. We have already executed one through the Swiss Federal Forensic Institute in Bern."
Francesca opened her folder and presented three certified copies of the official results to the court clerk.
"The test compares the child’s DNA against Mr. Vance’s medical profile on file with the Manhattan District Court," Francesca stated clearly, turning her eyes to the video screen where Jason was watching.
"Jason Vance is conclusively excluded as the biological father. Probability of paternity: zero percent."
On the monitor, Jason’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated shock. He leaned forward, clutching his microphone. "That’s a lie! Nicole swore to me! She swore on her life!"
"Nicole Laurent lied to you, Jason," Francesca said, her voice echoing through the courtroom with devastating finality. "Just as you lied to me for eleven years. The court has the truth. And this child will never be your pawn."
Magistrate Bellini reviewed the Swiss forensic seals, exchanged a brief, decisive glance with her fellow magistrates, and brought her gavel down with a sharp crack that silenced the hall.
"The petition of Jason Vance is dismissed with prejudice," Bellini ruled. "Guardianship of Aurelia Laurent remains solely with Francesca Moretti. Mr. Vance is barred from filing further motions in the Republic of Italy."

On the screen, Jason buried his face in his hands as his New York attorneys hastily cut the feed.
Francesca closed her eyes for a single heartbeat, feeling the crushing weight of eleven years of betrayal finally slide off her shoulders forever.
