Chapter 32 - The Cracks in the Marble

Dawn broke over Lake Como in streaks of slate gray and violent crimson. The storm that had threatened all night had finally rolled over the mountains, lashing rain against the tall palladian windows of the Rossi estate.
Francesca sat at her dressing table, fully dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal Ralph Lauren pantsuit, her hair pinned into an austere, elegant chignon. She had not slept a single minute. Beneath the flawless application of foundation and concealer, her skin was pale, her mind racing through dozens of corporate and legal contingencies.
When Jason had betrayed her eleven years into their marriage, leaving her for Nicole with a drawer full of secret debts and venomous insults, Francesca had rebuilt herself through sheer ruthlessness and strategic brilliance. She had dismantled Jason’s empire and reclaimed her dignity. But this was different. Julian had not merely deceived her in business; he had wrapped her in an intoxicating tapestry of devotion, worship, and absolute loyalty.
Could a man who loved so tenderly be capable of cold-blooded murder?
A discreet knock sounded at her door.
"Signora Francesca," Giancarlo’s voice was barely a murmur through the wood.
Francesca opened the door immediately, pulling the aging majordomo inside and locking it once more. Giancarlo looked weathered, the deep creases on his forehead betraying decades of Rossi family secrets.
"You knew," Francesca said without preamble, her voice cutting through the quiet room like a diamond. "You brought me that cylinder because you knew what was inside."
Giancarlo lowered his eyes, his hands trembling slightly as he held his silver tray empty against his side. "I served the old Count for thirty years, Signora. And I watched the young masters grow up. When the fire happened in St. Moritz, things were... chaotic. The Italian press reported an accidental gas explosion. But the police in Switzerland asked too many questions. Count Julian was only eighteen. He buried his father, sealed the estate, and took absolute command of Rossi Enterprises within months."
"And Christian?" Francesca pressed, stepping closer. "Did he survive? Is Aurelia his child?"
Giancarlo swallowed hard. "Christian was the wild one, Signora. Brilliant, reckless, consumed by darkness. There were rumors that he had fathered a child with a ballerina from London, but the woman died during childbirth. The child vanished into private foster care under the old Contessa's supervision. Then, four years ago, Count Julian brought Aurelia home to Lake Como and signed the adoption papers under his own name."
"And the mother?" Francesca’s heart hammered. "Julian's mother wrote that letter. She claimed Julian set the fire."
"The Dowager Contessa lost her mind after the tragedy," Giancarlo whispered urgently. "She spent twenty years in sanatoriums across Switzerland and Austria. But six months ago... she disappeared from her clinic. No one knew who took her. Now Christian has resurfaced. Signora, if Christian is alive and has allied himself with your old adversaries, the scandal will destroy Rossi Enterprises overnight. The market cap in New York and Milan will drop by billions."
"My adversaries?" Francesca’s eyes sharpened. "What do you mean?"
Giancarlo hesitated, then pulled a small slip of paper from his pocket. "A private jet touched down at Malpensa Airport at four o'clock this morning. It flew in from Miami via London. The passenger manifest lists Christian Rossi... and two American citizens."
Francesca looked down at the scribbled names: *Jason Vance. Nicole Vance.*
The room seemed to spin. A bitter, venomous laugh nearly escaped her throat.
Jason. Even after losing his firm, his reputation, and his freedom in New York, the cockroach had found a way to crawl out from the wreckage. Nicole’s family, disgraced but still possessing shadowy offshore connections, had apparently joined forces with Julian’s vengeful twin brother. They had found the one fracture in Julian’s armor—the blood secret of St. Moritz.
"Where is Julian right now?" Francesca asked, her voice dropping into icy resolve.
"In the grand salon on the ground floor," Giancarlo replied grimly. "His financial advisors from London have just arrived without an appointment. They claim an emergency shareholder challenge has been filed against his controlling shares."

Francesca tucked her phone into her blazer. "Let them challenge. If Jason and Christian think I am going to let them tear down what I helped Julian build, they have forgotten who I am."
