Chapter 16 - The Last Echo of Park Avenue

With Nicole Laurent facing decades behind bars and Jason Vance remanded into protective custody pending his plea agreement, the Vance empire had finally crumbled into dust.

On their final evening in New York before returning to Europe, Anna walked down Park Avenue alone. The autumn dusk was settling over the city, turning the sky into shades of deep violet and amber. She stopped at the corner of 72nd Street, looking up at the penthouse where she had lived for eleven years.

The lights were off. A large "FORECLOSURE AUCTION" banner hung discreetly from the lobby entrance. Movers were carrying out the last remnants of Jason’s art collection, loading them into unmarked trucks.

Suddenly, an elderly woman stepped out of the lobby, leaning heavily on a cane. Eleanor Vance looked frail, her signature elegance stripped away by the harsh glare of public disgrace. When she caught sight of Anna standing beneath the streetlamp, Eleanor stopped, her expression a mix of shame, anger, and profound defeat.

"Are you satisfied now, Anna?" Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling in the autumn chill. "You destroyed him. You destroyed our family name."

Anna looked at the woman who had made her feel small for more than a decade. For years, Anna had desperately tried to earn Eleanor’s approval, cooking elaborate holiday dinners, tolerating cruel passive-aggressive comments, and shrinking herself so that Jason and his mother could shine.

"I didn't destroy anything, Eleanor," Anna replied softly, the evening wind ruffling the hem of her coat. "Jason was a hollow statue. You spent his entire life convincing him he was a god, so he never learned how to be a man. When the wind blew, he fell. That is not my doing."

"What about Ethan and Sophie?" Eleanor cried, tears finally slipping down her wrinkled cheeks. "Will you keep them from me forever? Am I never to see my grandchildren again?"

Anna took a step forward, looking Eleanor directly in the eyes. "Ethan and Sophie know who their family is. When they are old enough, if they wish to seek you out, I will not stop them. But until then, they will grow up surrounded by honesty, kindness, and love—things they never would have learned under your roof."

Anna turned and walked toward the waiting black car where Julian stood by the open door. She didn't look back. The past was no longer an open wound; it was merely an abandoned building whose blueprints she had burned.
