Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The rain in Chicago had turned into an icy sleet by four in the afternoon.

Jason stood on the wet pavement outside the towering glass facade of Carter Enterprises, his designer trench coat soaked through, his tie crooked. Beside him, Lauren was frantically kicking the reinforced revolving doors, screaming at the two stone-faced security guards stationed inside the lobby.

“Open this door!” Lauren shrieked, her voice echoing down Michigan Avenue. “Do you know who we are?! This company belongs to the Carter family! My father’s name is engraved on the cornerstone!”

The head of security, a former Marine named Bradley whom Jason had personally hired five years ago, didn’t flinch. He walked slowly toward the glass, holding a laminated legal document against the window.

Jason stepped closer, squinting through the rain-streaked glass.

*NOTICE OF EXPULSION AND TRESPASS WARNING.*

*Issued by Order of the Board of Directors, Carter Enterprises Inc.*

*Subject: Jason M. Carter.*

*Status: Terminated for Cause.*

“Bradley!” Jason hammered his fist against the bulletproof glass. “Bradley, open this goddamn door right now! I pay your salary! I am the CEO of this company!”

Bradley pressed an intercom button beside the door frame. His voice emerged flat and robotic from the exterior speaker.

“You don’t pay anyone’s salary here anymore, Mr. Carter. By resolution of the Board of Directors passed at 3:15 PM today, your executive authority has been terminated under Article 9 of the corporate bylaws. You are officially classified as an unauthorized person on the premises.”

“Article 9 is for criminal conduct!” Jason screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. “I haven’t been convicted of anything!”

“You transferred twelve million dollars of corporate operational funds into unverified offshore accounts over a seven-month period under the guise of ‘consulting fees’ for Nicole Vance,” Bradley replied coolly. “The board’s forensic accounting team flagged the wires at noon. The interim chair has already submitted the file to the United States Attorney’s Office.”

Lauren gasped, grabbing Jason’s soaked arm. “The US Attorney?! Jason, what did you do?!”

“I didn’t do anything!” Jason yelled, spinning around in the downpour, running his hands through his dripping hair. “The money was an advance on my quarterly bonus! It was mine!”

“Bonuses require board approval, Mr. Carter,” Bradley added through the speaker. “And since the Ethan & Sophie Trust holds sixty-two percent of the voting power, the interim chair acted on the written instructions of the trustee.”

“Anna…” Jason whispered, his knees trembling. “Anna did this…”

“Mrs. Carter is the sole trustee,” Bradley said. “Her instructions were very specific. You are permitted one cardboard box of personal desk items, which will be mailed to your attorney’s office within five business days. Any attempt to access this building, the Lake Forest estate, or the Gold Coast residential properties will result in immediate arrest for criminal trespass.”

“My car!” Jason yelled, pointing toward the underground garage ramp. “My Aston Martin is down there! My clothes are at the penthouse!”

“The vehicle lease was held under Carter Logistics Corp,” Bradley replied. “It has been repossessed by corporate fleet management. And the penthouse locks were rekeyed two hours ago by the building management company, per court order.”

The intercom clicked off with a decisive snap. Bradley turned his back and walked back to the security desk.

Lauren sank onto the wet concrete steps, her knees hitting the puddle, her designer handbag falling into the slush. “We have nothing… Jason, we have nothing! Where are we supposed to sleep tonight? What about my condo? You promised you would pay off my mortgage this week!”

Jason stared at his sister, but he couldn't see her. All he could see was Anna’s calm, unblinking face across the mahogany table in Collins’s office that morning.

*“You should hurry, Jason. You wouldn’t want to miss the perfect future you’ve been bragging about.”*

She hadn't been bluffing. She hadn't been defeated. She had walked out of that office like a queen relinquishing a pile of garbage, knowing full well that within eight hours, every single pillar of his vanity would collapse in on him.

Jason pulled out his phone. The screen was cracked from when he had dropped it in the clinic parking lot. He dialed Anna’s number.

*“The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number and dial again.”*

He dialed the home landline in Lake Forest.

*“The number you have dialed has been disconnected at the subscriber's request.”*

He dialed Attorney Dawson’s office. A junior associate answered after four rings.

“Dawson Legal. How may I direct your call?”

“Put Dawson on the phone!” Jason barked, his teeth chattering uncontrollably from the freezing sleet. “This is Jason Carter! Tell him to tell Anna to pick up her phone right now!”

“One moment, Mr. Carter.”

A pause. Then Arthur Dawson’s smooth, dry voice came over the line.

“Mr. Carter. I am surprised you have the battery power to make calls. Shouldn’t you be meeting with a public defender?”

“Dawson, call off your dogs!” Jason begged, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by a desperate, wheezing panic. “Tell Anna to stop this! We can renegotiate! She can have forty percent of the company! Fifty percent! Just unfreeze the operational accounts so I can pay the staff! She can’t just take the kids and run!”

“Mr. Carter,” Dawson said, his tone icy. “Did you read Section 8 of the voluntary custody waiver you signed this morning?”

Jason’s stomach heaved. “What custody waiver?”

“The one you signed right before you checked your watch and said your real future was waiting,” Dawson said. “You relinquished all legal, physical, and residential custody of Ethan and Sophie Carter. You granted Anna full, irrevocable authority to relocate their permanent domicile anywhere in the world without requiring your consent or notification.”

“I was distracted!” Jason wailed. “I was under duress! Nicole was lying to me!”

“The court does not care about your mistress’s fabrications, Mr. Carter,” Dawson replied. “You declared under penalty of perjury that your children were a burden that would ‘slow you down.’ The judge accepted your sworn statement. As far as the State of Illinois is concerned, you are a legal stranger to those children until they reach the age of eighteen.”

“Dawson, please…” Jason choked, sliding down the wet granite pillar of his former building. “Where did she take them? Just tell me where they are.”

“They are in a place where your shadow cannot reach them, Jason,” Dawson said softly. “Goodbye, Mr. Carter.”

May you like

The line went dead.
