Chapter 43 - The Whispering Gallery

Julian’s head snapped toward me, a look of profound, chilling realization settling over his features. "Jason wasn't merely an opportunist," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, deadly and low. "He was recruited. From the moment Jason married you, Francesca, was it an accident? Or did they know who you were connected to?"
"I was an orphan from Boston who made partner on Wall Street through sheer grit," I whispered, shivering despite the warmth of the room. "Jason pursued me relentlessly. He told me he loved my strategic mind. But when our firm handled the restructuring of Rossi International's American holdings seven years ago... Jason demanded to lead the account alone."
"Because Matthew Ross commanded him to," Cardinal Montalbano affirmed solemnly. "Alberto's half-brother wanted a pipeline inside your firm. When Jason discarded you, Francesca, thinking you were broken and powerless, he had no idea you would walk into the very heart of the empire he was trying to bleed dry."
The Cardinal pushed the brass key across the table toward Julian. "The Veritas Ledger is kept in the subterranean vault beneath the Cortile del Belvedere. It contains the evidence Alberto gathered: the banking routing numbers, the forged wills, and the original signed contract where Matteo Rossi waived all claims to the Rossi dynasty in exchange for a payoff in 1978. Without that contract, Matteo’s legal representatives can challenge your legitimate title the moment Julian’s line produces an heir."
Julian picked up the heavy key. "We fetch it now."
"Be swift," the Cardinal warned, standing up with evident difficulty. "Rome has ears. Even within these ancient walls, loyalty can be bought."
Leaving the Cardinal’s study, Julian wrapped his heavy cashmere coat around my shoulders, shielding me as we descended a spiral staircase into the deeper levels of the Vatican archives. The air smelled of centuries of dust, frankincense, and chilled stone.
Suddenly, the lights flickered. A deep hum of a generator echoed from somewhere below, followed by the sudden, deafening sound of a heavy metal door slamming shut behind us.

The priest guiding us turned pale. "That... that was the fire suppression security gate. It shouldn't engage unless manually triggered from the exterior control room."
Footsteps echoed from the shadowy corridor ahead of us—slow, measured, and accompanied by the soft tapping of an expensive cane.
