Chapter 41 - The Codicil of the Holy See

The crimson wax cracked under my fingertips with a crisp, brittle snap that felt far too loud against the tranquil afternoon stillness of Lake Como. Julian stood beside me, his shoulder pressed firmly against mine, an anchor of solid warmth while my fingers trembled slightly around the heavy, cream-colored vellum. Aurelia’s distant laughter echoed from the lower lawn where she was chasing autumn butterflies, completely untouched by the sudden gravity descending upon the terrace.

Unfolding the parchment, I saw the intricate calligraphic Latin, followed by an elegant, unmistakable Italian translation written in the firm, sloping hand of the late Count Alberto Rossi.

"What does my father say, Francesca?" Julian asked, his deep voice hushed, laden with a reverence he rarely displayed.

I cleared my throat, translating aloud as my eyes devoured the words:

*To my son, Julian, and to the woman who carries the courage to renew the Rossi line: If this seal is broken, it means my prayers have been answered and life has returned to Bellagio. For decades, our house has guarded not merely land and steel, but a covenant. In 1944, when the fires of war threatened to obliterate northern Italy, my father entrusted the true archives of the Rossi consortium to the Secret Archives of the Vatican, sheltered beneath the seal of the Cardinal Camerlengo. Within those vaults lies the Veritas Ledger—proof of every alliance, every betrayal, and the hidden patrimony that funded the rebirth of Milan.*

My breath hitched. The letter continued:

*Be warned. The wolves who sought to divide our house did not begin with the vultures who orchestrated the Alpine tragedy, nor did they end with the foreign financiers who sought to strip your inheritance. A shadow branch of our bloodline exists, operating beneath the guise of a Swiss trust. They will strike the moment they sense a new heir is born. Go to Rome. Seek Cardinal Montalbano at the Apostolic Palace. Reclaim what was hidden before the serpent awakens.*

Julian’s face darkened, the joyous glow from moments earlier hardening into sculpted granite. He took the vellum from my hands, his jaw clenched tight.

"The Swiss trust," Julian whispered, his knuckles turning white. "During the court proceedings in Milan, the prosecutors could never trace the final origin of the fifty million euros Jason Vance secured to attempt the hostile takeover of our shipping division. The money vanished into numbered accounts in Zurich."

"Julian," I said softly, laying my hand gently over his clenched fist, feeling the sudden, fierce pounding of his pulse. "Jason didn't act alone. He was just a pawn for someone who has hated your family for generations."

He looked at me, his gaze dropping to my stomach where our child was barely beginning to grow. A ferocious, protective fire flared within his dark eyes. "Then we end it," Julian vowed, his voice a low rumble of uncompromising steel. "No one touches you. No one touches our children. Giancarlo!"

The butler stepped forward instantly. "Yes, Count Julian?"

"Prepare the private jet for Ciampino. We fly to Rome tonight."
