Chapter 33 - The Wolf in the Grand Salon

When Francesca descended the sweeping marble staircase into the grand salon, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Julian stood by the monumental marble fireplace, his tall frame rigid, an unlit cigar between his fingers. Surrounding the long oak conference table were four prominent barristers from London and Milan, their briefcases open, dossiers spread out across the antique wood.

As Francesca entered, Julian turned. The moment their eyes met, Francesca saw something she had never witnessed in Julian Rossi before: vulnerability. There was an exhaustion in his gaze, an agonizing tension that made his sculpted features look carved from stone.

"Francesca," Julian said softly, stepping toward her. "You shouldn't be down here. This is an internal legal matter."

"Nothing concerning the Rossi dynasty is outside my jurisdiction, Julian," she replied evenly, her high heels clicking with rhythmic authority across the herringbone parquet floor. She turned her cool gaze upon the lead London attorney. "Mr. Hetherington, isn't it? Senior partner at Clifford & Sterling. Explain why you are serving emergency injunctions on Lake Como at seven in the morning."

Hetherington cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his silver-rimmed spectacles. "Signora Rossi. We represent a trust registered in the Cayman Islands acting on behalf of an undisclosed primary shareholder holding thirty-four percent of the original Rossi-Lombardi family shares. They have filed a petition in the Milan Commercial Court to freeze Count Julian’s voting proxy, citing fraudulent inheritance claims."

"On what grounds?" Francesca demanded, crossing her arms.

"On the grounds that Count Julian is not the sole surviving heir," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the grand entrance hall.

Francesca froze. Julian’s jaw locked with an audible crack.

Walking past the double mahogany doors into the salon was a man whose appearance sent a cold shockwave through the room. He wore a midnight-blue overcoat, rain droplets glistening on his shoulders. He had Julian’s height, Julian’s raven hair, Julian’s aristocratic cheekbones—but his left temple bore a thin, jagged burn scar, and his mouth was curved into a cruel, mocking smirk.

And walking right behind him, dressed in an ostentatious white fur wrap, was Nicole. Standing at her side, looking thinner, older, and consumed by a feverish, desperate hatred, was Jason Vance.

"Hello, little brother," Christian Rossi said, his voice a rasping baritone that sounded like Julian’s voice warped through broken glass. "Did you miss me?"

Julian didn't flinch, but his fists clenched so tightly at his sides that the knuckles turned bloodless white. "You should have stayed in the shadows, Christian. You know why you were exiled."

"Exiled?" Christian threw his head back and laughed, a dark, theatrical sound. "You burned our father alive in his bed, Julian! You locked me in a burning cellar to steal the entire dynasty for yourself! And then you bought off the Swiss police, forged our mother's signature, and locked her in an asylum when she tried to scream the truth!"

Jason Vance stepped forward, his eyes burning with triumphant spite as he stared directly at Francesca. "Surprised, Francesca? You thought you could leave me in the gutter in Manhattan and play queen in Italy? Did you really think Julian was your white knight? You married a patricidal maniac!"

"Shut your mouth, Jason," Francesca said, her voice dropping into a register of lethal quiet that immediately silenced the American. "You couldn't manage a mid-tier real estate fund without embezzling from my family, and now you're barking like a lapdog behind another man's shadow. Have you no shame left at all?"

Nicole sneered, resting her manicured hand on Christian’s arm. "Keep talking, Francesca. Christian has the original will. He has the DNA match filed with the High Court in London. And most importantly... he has custody rights to Aurelia."

The air in the salon seemed to vanish.
