Chapter 24 - Confrontation in the Rain

Francesca spun around, scooping Aurelia into her arms with an instinct so primal it surprised her. Sister Beatrice rushed to the front window, drawing the lace curtains back with a gasp.

"Black sedans," the nun said, her voice shaking. "Milanese plates."

Francesca’s jaw tightened. She walked briskly to the foyer just as the front doors were pushed open by two burly men in charcoal suits. Behind them, stepping out of the torrential alpine rain and shaking off an umbrella, was Julian Rossi.

His face was carved from granite. His dark eyes, usually filled with adoration and calculated calm, burned with a furious intensity.

"Julian," Francesca said coldly, holding the toddler firmly against her hip. Aurelia buried her face into Francesca’s neck, sensing the sudden spike of adrenaline in the room.

"You left without a word, Francesca," Julian said, his voice dangerously low, reverberating through the small entryway. "You took a private charter to Geneva, cleared a dead woman's safe deposit box, and drove straight into Ticino. Did you truly believe my security detail wouldn't flag your movements the moment you crossed the border?"

"Did you truly believe you could keep this hidden from me forever?" Francesca countered, her voice ringing clear and fearless. She did not back down an inch. "Look at her, Julian. Look at her face! She is your niece. Matteo’s daughter!"

The mention of his brother’s name caused a visible ripple across Julian’s impassive mask. The two bodyguards at his flanks shifted uncomfortably, but Julian raised a single hand, signaling them to exit the chalet. The men obeyed instantly, closing the doors behind them.

Julian stood alone in the hallway, looking from Francesca to the little girl clinging to her coat.

"I didn't father that child, Francesca," Julian said, his tone raw and devoid of corporate polish.

"I know that," she replied sharply. "I saw the DNA reports. But you knew about her! You knew Nicole Laurent was carrying Matteo’s child while she was sleeping in my bed in New York with Jason! You used Nicole to bring down Matteo’s faction, and when Matteo died in that crash, you let Nicole flee to America with a fabricated pregnancy to destroy Jason Vance’s hedge fund!"

Julian stepped closer, his eyes pleading for understanding. "Matteo was a psychopath, Francesca! He was siphoning tens of millions from our family foundations to finance illegal arms contracts. When the board moved to oust him, he hired Nicole Laurent—a high-class corporate operative—to orchestrate an illegitimate heir claim that would trigger the trust's archaic succession clause. But Matteo died before he could sign the paperwork."

"And Nicole?" Francesca challenged, her heart hammering. "Why did she end up with Jason?"

"Nicole panicked," Julian revealed, stepping within inches of her, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "She knew that without Matteo, she had no legal standing in Switzerland. She fled to New York, met Jason Vance at a private charity gala, and saw an easy mark. A narcissistic billionaire with an insecure ego who was desperate for an heir. She conned Jason into believing the child was his to secure a sixty-million-dollar settlement in Manhattan!"

Francesca felt the world tilting once more. The puzzle pieces were violently shifting into place.

"Then why didn't you tell me?" Francesca demanded, tears finally spilling onto her cheeks. "When you brought me to Milan... when you took me into your home, into your life, into your bed... did you love me, Julian? Or was I just the ultimate shield to keep Nicole’s secrets buried?"

Julian reached out, his hand trembling as he gently touched Francesca’s cheek, wiping away a tear.

"I tracked Nicole to New York to destroy her before she could blackmail our family," Julian confessed, his voice breaking with rare vulnerability. "But the day I arrived in Manhattan, I saw you. I saw a brilliant, magnificent woman who had poured eleven years of her soul into an arrogant fool who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as her. I fell in love with your genius, your dignity, your fire. I swore I would protect you from ever knowing that the woman who stole your husband was part of the poison that infected my own family."

Aurelia stirred, looking up at Julian with wide, curious eyes. Julian looked down at his brother’s child, his expression softening into an agony of remorse.

"Nicole named you the guardian because she knew you were the only person on earth with the moral courage to protect this child from our family’s enemies," Julian said softly. "The board cannot find out about Aurelia, Francesca. If they do, they will turn this baby into a corporate weapon."

"No," Francesca said, holding the child closer. "They won't. Because they will have to go through me first."
