Chapter 26 - The Lioness at Bay

By the following morning, the private gates of Villa Rossi were swarmed by paparazzi, international news vans, and financial correspondents. The headline had caught fire on global social media: *THE SCANDAL OF TWO CONTINENTS: FORMER WALL STREET QUEEN HARBORS SECRET HEIRESS IN LAKE COMO.*
Inside the grand salon, the air was suffocating.
Three senior members of the Rossi Enterprises board of directors had arrived without invitation, led by Julian’s austere great-uncle, Don Vittorio Rossi. Vittorio was a relic of old Milanese aristocracy—an octogenarian who believed corporate bloodlines were matters of divine right and that women belonged purely in portrait frames.
"This is an unacceptable disgrace, Julian!" Vittorio’s voice echoed across the frescoed salon as he struck his silver-topped cane against the Persian rug. "A dead convict’s bastard child in our ancestral home? And Vance filing lawsuits that threaten to halt our merger with the French consortium?"
Julian sat casually on a velvet settee, sipping an espresso with chilling composure. "Watch your tongue in this house, Uncle. You are speaking of family."
"Family?!" Vittorio sneered. "Matteo was a traitor who disgraced the Rossi name! If this child is truly his, she carries the grandfather's legacy trust. Under the 1952 charter, a verified direct descendant of the elder branch can freeze our executive voting rights until she reaches the age of twenty-one! Do you realize what that means? The board would be paralyzed!"
"Which is why you intend to send her away," a cold, authoritative voice interrupted.
The heavy doors opened, and Francesca entered the salon.
She wore an impeccably tailored emerald silk jumpsuit, her hair swept up in an elegant chignon, her posture radiating unquestionable authority. In her arms, she held Aurelia, who was dressed in a soft cream knit dress. The little girl looked curiously around the room, clutching Francesca’s collar with absolute trust.
Vittorio’s eyes flared with disdain. "Signora Moretti. This is an internal Rossi family council. It does not concern Julian’s guest."
"I am not his guest, Don Vittorio," Francesca said, walking directly to the center of the room and standing before the old man. "I am the legally appointed, internationally verified guardian of Aurelia Laurent-Rossi. And you are standing in a house where you hold no legal jurisdiction."
Vittorio let out a dry, dismissive scoff. "An American divorcee dictating terms to the Rossi council? You have no power here, Signora. If that child’s heritage is validated, our lawyers will file for custody on behalf of the family trust and place her in a private boarding sanctuary in Geneva until she comes of age. You will be compensated for your services and escorted out of Italy."
Julian rose instantly to his feet, his jaw clenched, ready to strike, but Francesca held up a single hand, stopping him in his tracks.
She looked Vittorio dead in the eye, her voice cutting like a diamond through glass.
"Try to touch her, Vittorio, and I will bankrupt you before lunch," Francesca said evenly.
The room fell dead silent.
"What did you say?" Vittorio stammered, his aristocratic composure cracking.
"You think I’ve spent the last six months designing pretty villas?" Francesca opened a leather portfolio she had been carrying under her arm, dropping a thick stack of audited documents onto the coffee table with a resounding thud.
"Three weeks ago, the Lombardy Regional Council approved my architectural urban revival masterplan for the entire historic canal district of Milan—a seven-hundred-million-euro civic contract. The contract’s structural development rights are held by Moretti Design Group. And the primary investor required to finance the municipal bonds is Rossi Enterprises."
She leaned forward, her gaze unwavering.
"If the Rossi board attempts any legal action against this child’s guardianship, I will immediately pull the development rights and transfer the masterplan to the Morini Group in Turin. Your stock will crash twenty percent in an afternoon. Furthermore, I will publicly release the forensic audit proving that you, Don Vittorio, were the board member who secretly financed Matteo’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands before his crash."
Vittorio’s face drained of all color. He looked down at the audited bank statements with horror. His hands began to tremble against his cane.
"You... you couldn't possibly have obtained these," Vittorio whispered.
"Nicole Laurent was a ruthless blackmailer, Vittorio," Francesca said coolly. "She kept meticulous records of everyone who ever paid her. And she gave the entire vault to me."

Julian stepped forward, coming to stand beside Francesca. He wrapped a strong, protective arm around her waist, looking down at his humbled uncle with triumphant finality.
"The council is adjourned, Uncle," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute dominance. "Aurelia stays here. Under Francesca’s guardianship. And any board member who breathes a single word against my family will find their shares liquidated by morning. Get out."
