Chapter 46 - The Ball at Villa d’Este

The revelation sent a shockwave through my spine. Jason Vance was free. He was on European soil. The man who had stripped me of my dignity, who had smirked as he left me with nothing on Park Avenue, was lurking in the shadows of our new life.

Yet, we could not afford to retreat into hiding. To retreat would be a sign of weakness that the global markets would exploit.

Forty-eight hours later, the Veritas Ledger safely secured in Julian's private bank in Milan, we stood once again at Lake Como. It was the night of the annual Rossi Autumn Gala at the historic Villa d’Este, a gathering of Europe’s most powerful industrialists, politicians, and aristocrats.

I stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in our suite, wearing an emerald green silk gown that cascaded gracefully over my body, subtly masking the earliest bloom of my pregnancy. Around my neck hung the Rossi emeralds, an heirloom passed down through four centuries of resilient women.

Julian came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, his hands gently resting over my abdomen. He kissed the curve of my neck, his dark eyes meeting mine in the reflection.

"You look breathtaking, Francesca," he whispered. "A true Countess."

"Are you certain it’s wise to host this tonight?" I asked, turning slightly in his arms. "If Jason is out there..."

"Villa d’Este is a fortress tonight," Julian said firmly, his eyes fierce with unyielding conviction. "Every entrance is guarded. Every guest has been vetted through three levels of biometric screening. We will not live our lives in the shadows of cowards. Tonight, we announce our marriage, and we announce the coming of our heir. We declare to the entire world that House Rossi is invincible."

I leaned into his embrace, drawing strength from his iron resolve. He was right. Running had never saved me; fighting back with intellect and dignity had brought me here.

When we descended the grand marble staircase of Villa d’Este together, arm in arm, the grand ballroom fell into an awed, reverent silence before erupting into spontaneous applause. The elite of Europe saw a couple unbroken by scandal, unbowed by treachery, standing at the pinnacle of power.
