Chapter 54 - The Spider’s Last Parlay

The morning sun rose over Lake Como not with warmth, but with a pale, steely light that mirrored the tension inside the villa. By eight o'clock, a secure diplomatic transport flanked by two Carabinieri escort vehicles was idling at the foot of our estate.

Jason Vance had made his demand: he would hand over the offshore encryption keys, the names of every corrupt magistrate on Matthew Ross’s payroll, and the physical location of Nicole’s hidden shell accounts—but only to me, face to face, in the high-security visitor annex of San Vittore prison.

"I will not let you go alone," Julian said, standing in the doorway of my dressing suite as I fastened the cuffs of my tailored black blazer. His voice was firm, leaving no room for argument, but his eyes were filled with profound gentleness.

"I don't intend to go alone, Julian," I said, turning to him and smoothing the lapel of his coat. "You pulled me out of the ruins of Manhattan. You stood by me when I was nothing more than a broken woman clutching a worthless ultrasound scan. You are my partner in this empire. We finish this together."

A faint, tender smile touched his lips, though the intensity in his dark eyes never wavered. "Then let us show Jason Vance the woman he was never worthy of touching."

Arthur joined us in the convoy, his presence a grim reminder of the generational war that had stolen my childhood. The drive to Milan passed in tense silence, the Alpine landscape giving way to the gray, imposing concrete walls and razor wire of San Vittore.

The prison warden, a stern man with rows of service ribbons on his uniform, met us at the sally port. "Signora Rossi, Count Julian. Signor Vance has been placed under suicide watch and level-four administrative segregation. He has refused food for thirty-six hours. He is... not the man who used to grace the cover of Forbes."

We were led through three fortified airlocks, the sound of heavy steel slamming shut behind us reverberating through the damp stone corridors. Finally, we entered the glass-divided interrogation chamber.

On the other side of the three-inch-thick ballistic glass sat Jason.

The transformation was shocking. The razor-sharp, bronzed titan of Wall Street had withered away. His tailored Brioni suits were replaced by a dull orange prison jumpsuit. His golden hair was greasy and unkempt, his hollow cheeks covered in patchy stubble, and his hands trembled violently as he gripped the edge of the metal table.

When the guard unlocked his handcuffs and he lifted his head, his bloodshot eyes locked onto mine. A choked, pathetic sob escaped his lips.

"Francesca..." he gasped, pressing his trembling palms against the cold glass. "Thank God... Francesca, please... you have to listen to me!"
