Chapter 30 - Dawn over Lake Como

As twilight settled over the lake, the guests began to filter down toward the private docks where water taxis waited under the glowing lanterns. The soft strains of a string quartet echoed from the lower garden, mingling with the gentle lapping of the waves against the stone seawall.
Julian had carried a sleeping Aurelia upstairs to the villa’s private quarters, leaving Francesca alone on the grand terrace to watch the stars emerge over the jagged silhouette of the Alps.
The cool evening breeze ruffled the silk of her gown. She took a deep breath of the pine-scented mountain air, reveling in the silence, the victory, and the profound peace she had fought so hard to claim.
Every battle had been won.
Jason Vance had been convicted on federal wire fraud charges in New York three weeks ago, sentenced to eight years in federal prison—his empire dissolved, his name permanently disgraced. Nicole Laurent was at rest. The Rossi dynasty was secure, united, and thriving under a new banner of honor and truth.
And yet, as Francesca leaned against the balustrade, the sound of hurried footsteps clicking against the stone stairs broke the stillness of the night.
Giancarlo, Julian’s chief of personal security, appeared at the archway of the terrace. His expression was taut, his eyes darting toward the lit windows of the master suite before landing on Francesca.
"Signora Francesca," Giancarlo said in a hushed, urgent tone. "Forgive the intrusion. But this arrived by private courier from London just ten minutes ago. It bypassed the corporate offices and was delivered directly to the gates."
Francesca turned, a faint frown touching her brow. "A message from London? From who?"
Giancarlo stepped forward, holding out a sleek, modern silver cylinder sealed with a biometric security thumbprint scanner.
"The courier was instructed to deliver it only into your hands, Signora," Giancarlo said gravely. "The dispatch originates from the private medical archives of King's College Hospital in London. The sender is listed under a sealed trust executed five years ago."
Francesca took the cold silver cylinder. Her fingers brushed against the small digital display on the side.
As her thumb touched the biometric pad, the mechanism hissed, sliding open to reveal a single micro-dossier and a sealed handwritten letter bearing an emblem that made her breath catch in her throat.
It was not Nicole’s handwriting. It was not Jason’s.
It was written in the delicate, trembling script of Julian’s mother—the Dowager Contessa Rossi, who was believed to have passed away in a Swiss sanatorium when Julian was only a boy.
Francesca unfolded the paper beneath the moonlight. Her eyes scanned the first few words:
*'Dearest Francesca,*
*If you are reading this, Julian has made you his wife, and the world believes my son is the sole remaining heir of the Rossi bloodline.*
*Before you give your entire soul to the Rossi name, you must know the truth about the night Julian's father died. Julian was not the boy who survived the fire. Julian was the boy who started it.*
*And the true heir to the empire—the brother he claimed died in the Alps—is still alive. He is in London. And he is coming to take back his daughter.'*
The paper trembled in Francesca’s hand.
From the doorway behind her, the heavy glass doors opened. Julian walked out onto the moonlit terrace, a glass of wine in his hand, a radiant, loving smile on his lips.

"Cara mia," Julian called out softly across the terrace, stepping toward her into the silver light. "Aurelia is fast asleep. What are you doing out here in the cold?"
Francesca closed her fist around the letter, her heart dropping into a bottomless abyss, staring at the man she had sworn to love as the dark waters of Lake Como churned beneath the rising wind...
