Chapter 79 - The Sovereign Shattered

At dawn, the *Nautilus-II* surfaced in a hidden sea cave carved into the volcanic cliffs of São Miguel Island.

The morning sun filtered through the entrance, casting ripples of emerald and sapphire light across the calm water. Waiting on the stone dock was not an army of mercenaries, but a squad of seasoned, gray-haired veterans in Royal Marine fatigues, standing guard around an elderly man in a dress naval uniform, leaning on a polished ebony cane.

Admiral Arthur Vance had the same piercing gray eyes as Julian, but they were filled with grief and iron resolve. As the hatch opened and I carried Leo up into the salty morning air, the old admiral bowed his head with deep reverence.

"Clara Sterling," Admiral Vance said, his voice trembling with quiet emotion. "I watched the satellite feed of your battle. No army on this planet could have defended that child with the ferocity you showed last night."

Leo stirred in my arms, rubbing his eyes against the bright morning glare. He looked down at the old man’s shiny brass buttons and hid his face shyly in my neck.

"Is he safe here, Admiral?" I asked, refusing to lower my guard. "Because if there is a single traitor on this island, I will burn this rock to the sea bed."

"He is safe, my girl," Vance assured me, stepping aside to reveal a medical transport with world-class pediatric specialists standing by with gentle, reassuring smiles. "While you were fighting on the water, my intelligence units seized the central server vaults of the Sterling Corporation in London, New York, and Singapore. Brooke Vance and the remaining board members have been indicted for international human trafficking, corporate treason, and attempted murder. Every bank account funding the bounty on this boy has been frozen by the International Criminal Court."

A wave of overwhelming relief broke over me, almost knocking my knees out from under me. Julian caught me by the waist, steadying me as tears finally spilled freely down my cheeks.

Two years of living in shadows. Two years of bleeding, fighting, and tracking the monsters who had stolen my flesh and blood. It was over. The empire that had crushed my son under its heel was shattered into a thousand irrecoverable pieces.

We walked into the cliffside estate as the morning sun warmed our skin. Leo held my hand tightly, walking on his two little feet, his bruised knees wrapped in clean white bandages, laughing as a gentle seabreeze ruffled his brown hair.

For the first time in two years, we were home.
