Chapter 62 - The Chimera Protocol

Within twenty minutes, our safehouse in Tuscany was transformed into an emergency triage bunker. Julian had barred the iron shutters, initiated passive cloaking arrays around the perimeter, and hooked Leo up to an intravenous saline drip fortified with broad-spectrum neural suppressants.
My son lay on the leather couch under a weighted blanket, breathing in shallow, rhythmic rasps. His tiny hand stayed locked around my index finger, gripping it with the fierce desperation of a child clinging to the edge of a cliff.
"Look at this," Julian called out quietly, waving me over to the war-room monitor where multiple satellite images and military dossiers were rendering in real time.
I rose reluctantly, kissing Leo's damp forehead before stepping behind Julian's chair. "Tell me who did this to my child. Tell me whose throat I need to tear out."
"The Castiglione family wasn't the head of the snake, Clara. They were merely the European distributors," Julian said, zooming in on an unmapped coral atoll in the South Pacific, obscured beneath artificial cloud cover on commercial GPS satellites. "Twenty years ago, a consortium of billionaire geneticists and shadow defense contractors formed an initiative known as *Project Chimera*. Their objective was terrifying: create a lineage of human vessels capable of bio-neural synchronization—living biological computers capable of decoding sovereign banking keys, military firewalls, and encrypted global wealth vaults with their own minds."
My stomach lurched with nauseating disgust. "And Leo...?"
"Leo wasn't Richard Sterling’s son by accident," Julian replied, pulling up a classified birth registry from an offshore fertility clinic in Zurich dated five years ago. "Richard was broke long before you married him, Clara. His business empire collapsed in the early 2010s. To secure bailout money from the Chimera syndicate, he volunteered to act as an surrogate incubator host. You were chosen as the mother not out of love, but because your lineage carried an exceptionally rare maternal genetic buffer—a mitochondrial resilience that ensured the child would survive the synthetic genome grafting."
The room spun around me. Every memory of my marriage, every affectionate word Richard had ever uttered, every promise made over candlelight turned to foul, putrid ash in my mouth.
"He sold our unborn baby," I whispered, the words trembling with unimaginable rage. "He married me, took my family's backing, smiled at my pregnancy announcements... and all along, Leo was just a corporate delivery order?"
"Precisely," Julian said grimly. "When Brooke took over the house and starved Leo, she wasn't just abusing him out of sadistic jealousy—she was testing his distress thresholds. Pain triggers the dormant chimeric markers. The enzyme Brooke injected him with at the docks was the catalyst. It began unspooling the encrypted DNA sequence."
Julian pointed to the screen where a countdown timer ticked backward: *47 HOURS, 12 MINUTES UNTIL FULL INTEGRATION.*
"If that timer hits zero," Julian said, his eyes dark with dread, "Leo's conscious identity will be permanently overwritten by the network's master algorithm. He won't know who you are, Clara. He will become an organic terminal for Chimera."
May you like
I stared at the screen, my trembling hands curling into white-knuckled fists until my nails drew blood from my palms. "Then we don't wait for them to come to us. We burn their network to the ground."
