Chapter 7 - Ambush in the Shadows

The piercing wail of the building’s fire alarm echoed off the high ceilings, flashing strobe lights painting the penthouse in violent bursts of white and red.

"Evelyn, the fire alarm just tripped," I said into the phone, adrenaline surging through my veins like lightning.

"Clara, get into the panic room! Do not leave the apartment!" Evelyn shouted over the static.

I dropped the phone, scooped Leo up into my arms, and rushed toward the master suite where the reinforced safe room was located.

Suddenly, the front door of the penthouse exploded inward.

It wasn't the police.

One of my private security guards tumbled backward onto the marble floor, unconscious, bleeding from a heavy blow to the temple. Standing in the doorway was Dominic.

He was unrecognizable.

The tailored suits and polished manners were gone. His clothes were filthy, his hair matted with sweat, his eyes wild and bloodshot with absolute madness. In his right hand, he clutched a heavy steel crowbar; in his left, a small canister of commercial pepper spray. Beside him stood Victoria, her face twisted with a grotesque, feral desperation, clutching an empty duffel bag.

"Clara!" Dominic screamed, his voice cracking into a manic shriek. "Give him to me! Give me the boy!"

Leo screamed—a piercing, terrified shriek—and buried his face into my neck, his little hands clawing into my shirt.

"Stay back, Dominic!" I yelled, backing slowly toward the kitchen island, keeping my body between him and our son. "The police are already here! You won't make it out of this building alive!"

"There are no police downstairs!" Victoria shrieked, her voice shaking with manic rage. "Dominic pulled the fire alarm in the basement! The whole lobby is in chaos! They’re evacuating the tower! Nobody is coming for you, Clara!"

"Give me the boy, Clara, and sign the trust release!" Dominic screamed, stepping toward me, swinging the crowbar erratically. "Croft gave me twelve hours to leave the country! If I have Leo, the trust trusteeship transfers back to me under the emergency medical clause! I take the private jet, I get the fifty million, and you never see us again!"

"You're insane," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly calm as I reached the edge of the kitchen counter. My fingers brushed against the handle of a heavy chef's knife resting on the cutting board. "You think you can kidnap him in broad daylight?"

"He’s my son!" Dominic roared, lunging forward.

He didn't anticipate what happened next.

Instead of cowering, instead of weeping, I didn't back down.

I set Leo down behind the reinforced kitchen island. "Stay down, Leo. Close your eyes, baby."

Then I grabbed the heavy cast-iron skillet from the stovetop and swung it with all the fury of a mother defending her child.

The iron met Dominic’s collarbone with a sickening *crack*.

Dominic let out a howl of agony, dropping the crowbar as he stumbled backward, clutching his shattered shoulder. "You crazy bitch!"

Victoria screamed and rushed toward the kitchen island, her claw-like fingers reaching for Leo. "Give him to me! He belongs to the Sterlings!"

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed Victoria by her designer coat collar and slammed her hard against the marble breakfast bar. The pearls around her neck snapped, scattering across the floor like hail.

"Don't you ever touch my son again!" I hissed into her face.

Victoria gasped, looking into my eyes and finally realizing, too late, that there was no mercy left in me. The refined daughter-in-law she had bullied and manipulated was dead. Standing before her was an executioner.

Suddenly, footsteps pounded down the hallway.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Six heavily armed tactical officers burst through the shattered doorway, weapons drawn and aimed.

Dominic, pinned against the wall, raised his uninjured hand in terror. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"

Officer Reynolds stepped through the smoke, his face grim. He looked at Dominic, slumped on the floor in agony, then at Victoria, pinned under my arm against the counter, and finally at me.

"Mrs. Sterling," Reynolds said, lowering his weapon slightly. "Are you and the child all right?"

I let go of Victoria. She crumpled to the floor, weeping into her hands among the scattered pearls.

I turned around, knelt down behind the kitchen island, and pulled Leo into my arms.

He was trembling, but he wasn't screaming. He looked into my eyes, reached up with his small hand, and touched my cheek.

"Mama," he whispered softly. "Safe."

May you like

"Yes, my love," I whispered, kissing his forehead as the officers clamped heavy metal cuffs onto Dominic’s wrists. "You're safe. Forever."
