Chapter 63 - Shadows in the Sanctuary

The breach occurred at 03:14 AM.

There were no sirens, no explosive bangs, only the sudden, eerie death of every electrical appliance in the Tuscan farmhouse. The ambient hum of the refrigerator ceased. The soft blue light of Leo's IV monitor died instantly.

In the total blackness, Julian’s night-vision goggles clicked into place with a dry, mechanical snap. "EMP burst," he hissed, sliding a silenced submachine gun across the kitchen island into my hands. "Ground-level shock team. They bypassed the outer motion sensors using laser-guided optical blinders. They aren't here to kill—they're here for the extraction."

I didn't hesitate. Maternal instinct completely overpowered fear, replacing my pulse with pure liquid adrenaline. I scooped Leo into a heavy-duty tactical chest sling, securing his limp, feverish body firmly against my chest beneath a Kevlar jacket. His head rested right against my sternum, his slow, hot breaths brushing my neck.

"Mommy..." he mumbled through the haze of the sedative.

"Shh, my angel. Close your eyes. Mommy is taking care of the monsters."

A shatter of tempered glass exploded from the rear conservatory. Two figures dressed in matte-black tactical exoskeletons vaulted through the breach, their customized carbines fitted with tranquilizer payloads.

Julian fired first. Three suppressed thuds spat from his weapon, dropping the point man instantly before his boots hit the stone floor. But the second operative rolled behind an antique credenza, returning fire with lethal precision. The ricochets peppered the kitchen cabinets, showering us in white plaster and splintered cherry wood.

"Basement tunnel! Now!" Julian shouted, tossing a flash-bang grenade down the corridor to blind the incoming sweep.

I sprinted toward the cellar door, but another shadow detached itself from the pantry entryway. A massive commando lunged forward, reaching directly for the sling holding Leo.

"Hand over the asset, Mrs. Sterling," the man grated, his hand clamping around my left shoulder like an iron vice.

The word *asset* severed the last shred of my restraint.

Dropping my carbine, I drew the combat blade from my thigh sheath and drove it upward with savage, blinding speed. The blade sliced through his arm sleeve, severing the tendon in his forearm. He howled in shock, his grip faltering. Before he could recover, I drove my steel-toed combat boot into his fractured kneecap, spinning around to pin his helmeted head against the stone jamb.

"He is not an asset!" I snarled, thrusting the blade through the vulnerable seam beneath his tactical helmet, feeling the hot spray of crimson wash over my knuckles. "He is my son!"

The giant slumped dead at my feet.

Julian rounded the corner, breathing heavily, smoke trailing from his barrel. "More outside! They've surrounded the perimeter with armored SUVs! We can't use the garage!"

"The wine cellar," I panted, tightening the straps around Leo as my boy whimpered softly against my chest. "The 18th-century aqueduct runs beneath the foundations out to the olive groves. Move!"
