Chapter 42 - The Vanishing Footprints

I pressed Leo’s head against my collarbone, shielding his eyes as Julian moved through the patio doors like a wraith. The salt air whipped inside, cold and heavy with the scent of an impending storm.

"Stay here, my brave lion," I whispered, kissing Leo’s soft forehead. "Close your eyes and count to twenty. Mommy will be right back."

"Is it bad people again?" Leo asked, his small fingers clinging tightly to my sweater. The phantom scars on his little knees were gone, but the memory of cruelty lingered in his innocent soul. "Like Brooke and Daddy?"

"Nobody will ever hurt you again, Leo," I swore, looking deep into his wide hazel eyes. "I will burn the world down before anyone touches a single hair on your head."

I handed Leo to Sarah, our battle-hardened head of domestic security who was already stationed in the safe-room doorway with an MP5 drawn. Once the vault door sealed with a heavy hydraulic thud, I racked the slide of my custom Kimber .45 and stepped onto the terrace beside Julian.

On the white sand below our clifftop deck, illuminated only by the churning foam of the tide, stood an obsidian stake driven deep into the earth. Hanging from the stake was a silver envelope fluttering violently against the wind.

The three thermal signatures Julian had spotted had vanished into the churning surf, leaving no boat, no wakes, and no heat trails behind.

Julian covered the perimeter while I dropped to the sand, sweeping the area for tripwires before snatching the envelope. It was stamped with the same double-headed falcon wax seal.

Inside was a single legal document and an original medical manifest from Saint Helena Clinic in Geneva, dated five years ago.

My eyes scanned the clinical font, and my breath caught in my throat.

*Patient: Clara Sterling.*

*Procedure: Emergency Delivery / Embryonic Origin Verification.*

*Biological Sire: Heir Apparent, Lord Lucian Castiglione.*

*Contract Custodian: Arthur Sterling.*

The paper trembled in my hand, but my mind raced with razor-sharp deduction. Arthur Sterling hadn’t just been an adulterous coward; he had been sterile. To secure the Sterling family trust and hide his impotence from his ruthless board, he had made a devil's pact with an ancient dynasty desperate to preserve its bloodline without exposing their primary heirs to internal civil war. They had used me. They had used my womb, allowed Arthur to act as the legal father, and intended to harvest Leo on his fifth birthday like a prize cattle.

"They think I am just an incubator," I hissed into the howling wind, crushing the document in my fist until the wax shattered into red dust. "They think because they have ancient titles and billions of euros, I will hand over my son."

Julian stepped up beside me, his gaze blazing with lethal devotion. "What is the play, Clara?"

"Arthur thought he could abuse my boy and walk away. Brooke thought she could treat him like an animal and live in luxury. Both are rotting in solitary cells or dead," I said, my voice dripping with cold, unyielding malice. "If the House of Castiglione wants their blood back... they will have to pay for it in gallons."
