Chapter 51 - The Crucible of Red Steel

The crimson emergency beacons cast deep, bleeding shadows across the polished obsidian floor. The vault’s air filtration system hissed violently, pumping in heavy Halon gas meant to suffocate anyone trapped within five minutes.
"Clara! Move!" Julian barked, shoving his ceramic combat blade into the manual control seam of the primary blast gate. Sparks showered over his tactical armor.
On the floor, Lucian coughed, his crimson-stained teeth bared in a grotesque grin. "You can't escape Mother’s tomb, Clara. She built this fortress seventy years ago... every brick is soaked in our family's ambition. You thought you were saving your little bastard? You brought him directly to the altar!"
A primal fury, hotter than any fire on earth, erupted within my chest. My four-year-old boy was thousands of miles away, choking on his own breath in Sarah’s arms, while this broken excuse of a man lay gloating.
I did not hesitate. Dropping my weight, I stepped onto Lucian’s shattered collarbone with the full force of my combat boot. The crunch of splintering bone was drowned out by his blood-curdling scream.
"Shut up," I hissed, leaning down until my eyes, burning with cold maternal venom, met his dilated pupils. "You are going to override this blast door right now, or I will let this gas choke you to death while I breathe through Julian's rebreather."
"The... the console on the north pillar," Lucian gasped, tears streaming down his bruised cheeks. "The biometric scanner... uses my right palm. Mother left a secondary fail-safe for family..."
Julian grabbed Lucian by his leather collar, dragging him like a sack of dead weight across the floor. Slamming Lucian’s bloody palm against the glowing scanner plate, Julian shouted over the klaxons: "Override sequence: Castiglione Zero-Nine!"
The scanner flashed amber, then green. The hydraulic pistons shrieked as the three-ton steel gate shuddered and rose six inches off the ground.
"Get under! Now!" Julian shouted, wedging a titanium breaching bar beneath the gap to hold the pressure.
I clutched the cryogenic case against my chest with one arm, dropped to my stomach, and slid beneath the descending teeth of the steel gate. Julian followed a heartbeat later, kicking Lucian backward into the sealed chamber as the door slammed shut with a deafening thud, entombing the traitor in his own mother’s trap.
We sprinted through the smoking corridors, gunfire from Eleanor’s arriving assault teams chewing up the marble walls around us. My wrist comm was still buzzing with static, but I could hear Sarah’s ragged breathing.
"Sarah! Sarah, answer me!" I screamed into the mic as Julian blew the exterior helipad doors open with a micro-charge.
"Clara..." Sarah’s voice broke through, choked with sobs. "I gave him the emergency adrenaline shot... he’s breathing, but his pulse is fifty! There are black SUVs surrounding the villa! They’re breaching the courtyard!"

The freezing Mediterranean wind whipped my hair across my face as we broke onto the rooftop. A twin-turbine stealth chopper was already hovering fifty feet above the deck, its hoist cable dropping fast.
"Tell Marcus to light up the perimeter defense!" I yelled into the comm, clipping my carabiner to the cable alongside Julian. "Hold the line for two hours, Sarah. Tell Leo Mommy is coming, and I will rip the sky apart before I let anyone take him."
