Chapter 60 - The Unseen Signal

The afternoon drifted into a serene, tranquil twilight. Leo had fallen asleep on the living room sofa, curled up with his new puppy, exhausted from a full day of playing in the Tuscan sun.
Sarah and Marcus had taken the car into town to fetch groceries for a celebratory dinner, leaving Julian and me in the quiet library of the villa.
I stood before the large mahogany desk, reviewing the final dissolution documents of Lucian’s old shell companies. Everything was clean. The Sterling name was redeemed, the foundation's funds redirected to orphanages and children's hospitals across the continent.
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite scanner on the desk—the military receiver Julian had kept active to monitor syndicate frequencies—emitted a sharp, rhythmic ping.
Julian, who was cleaning his sidearm by the window, immediately froze. "That's impossible. Eleanor’s private network was shut down three days ago by Europol."
"Could it be an automated ping from an abandoned server?" I asked, walking over to the terminal.
"No," Julian muttered, striding to the desk, his eyes narrowing as lines of code began rapidly scrolling across the black screen. "This isn't an automated relay. It's a priority quantum broadcast, encrypted using fifty-twelve-bit cipher keys."
The screen flickered. A world map appeared, zooming in past Europe, past the Mediterranean, focusing entirely on a remote, uncharted island chain in the South Pacific.
Then, a text line decrypted itself, burning in stark, phosphor green against the monitor:
*SUBJECT: PROJECT CHIMERA — PHASE TWO INITIATION.*
*TARGET CARRIER: LEO STERLING.*
*STATUS: GENETIC REPROGRAMMING COMPLETE.*
My blood ran instantly cold. "What does that mean? Genetic reprogramming complete? Julian, we destroyed the micro-transponder in the helicopter!"
"We destroyed the radio transponder," Julian whispered, his face turning completely pale as he realized the horrifying truth. "Clara... the stabilizing enzyme didn't just cure his nerves. It was engineered to trigger a dormant genetic marker..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the living room.
We drew our weapons simultaneously and sprinted toward the lounge.
The puppy was barking hysterically at the corner of the room.
Leo was standing in the center of the Persian rug, but he wasn't crying, and he wasn't scared.
His small hands were clenched into rigid fists. His posture was unnaturally upright, stiff, like an elite soldier standing at attention.
"Leo...?" I called out, my voice trembling with rising dread as I took a slow step forward. "Baby, it's Mommy. Look at me."
Slowly, mechanically, my four-year-old son turned his head toward us.
His eyes—the warm, innocent brown eyes I had kissed just hours ago—were glowing with a faint, iridescent violet luminescence.
May you like
And when he parted his lips to speak, the voice that came out of my little boy was not his own, but a deep, synthetic, chilling cadence that made the very air in the room freeze:
*"Directive received. Awakening the Prime Heir."*
