Chapter 38 - In the Lion's Den

The winding spiral staircase of the Iron Spire seemed to stretch on forever, each iron step ringing beneath our boots like the ticking of a death clock. Julian moved in front, weapon raised, clearing every landing with razor-sharp vigilance.

We reached the heavy oak doors of the penthouse observation deck. With a firm kick, Julian breached the entryway.

The vast circular room offered a panoramic view of the raging storm through floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass. Lightning flashed across the ink-black sea, illuminating the luxury interior filled with antique mahogany, oil paintings, and leather armchairs.

Standing by the window, a glass of vintage scotch in his hand, stood Arthur Sterling.

He was in his late sixties, with slicked-back silver hair and a tailored charcoal suit that concealed the rot of his soul. Beside him stood his last remaining bodyguard—a towering mountain of a man holding an assault rifle aimed directly at Julian.

"Welcome, Clara," Arthur said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink without turning around immediately. "You've caused me an extraordinary amount of financial inconvenience over the past few months. Millions of dollars seized. My idiot son imprisoned. My empire dismantled."

He turned slowly, his pale blue eyes devoid of any human empathy.

"And all because of that pathetic little bastard boy you couldn't keep quiet," Arthur sneered, spitting the words like poison.

Hearing him refer to Leo with such venom made my blood boil, but I forced my breathing to remain steady. I did not lower my weapon.

"His name is Leo," I said, my voice echoing like thunder across the room. "And he has more courage in his little finger than your entire bloodline ever possessed."

Arthur chuckled, shaking his head with condescending pity. "Courage? In this world, Clara, courage is a fairy tale told to weak people to make them die quietly. Power is the only currency that matters."

"Your power is gone, Arthur," Julian interrupted coldly, his sight locked onto the bodyguard's forehead. "Federal agents have seized your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. Coast Guard cutters have completely surrounded Devil's Shoal. That yacht outside? It’s not sailing anywhere."

Arthur's smirk didn't waver. Instead, a terrifying, manic gleam lit up his eyes.

"You think this was about escaping?" Arthur whispered. "Oh, Julian... you disappoint me."
