Chapter 50 - The Edge of Tomorrow

The ancient stone walls of Villa Castiglione shook under the deafening impact of C4 charges.
Alarms wailed across the Sicilian hills, painting the night sky in flashes of red and white. Smoke billowed from the eastern wing as Julian’s strike team breached the perimeter, cutting through the Black Falcon mercenaries with ruthless efficiency.
I dragged Lucian through the smoke-filled catacombs beneath the estate, my Kimber aimed firmly at his spine. Julian moved ahead of us, clearing corner after corner with lethal double-taps.
Finally, deep within the ancient granite bedrock, we reached Vault Zero.
A massive blast door of titanium and obsidian stood barred before us, illuminated by a single glowing retinal scanner.
"Open it," I commanded, shoving Lucian toward the terminal.
Lucian staggered forward, looking back at me with a twisted, hollow grin. "You think you’ve won, Clara. You think once you get this vial, you can ride off into the sunset with your broken boy."
"Open the damn door, Lucian, before I carve your eye out of your skull and scan it myself!" I screamed, the image of Leo suffering in that Florence safe-house burning a hole through my soul.
Lucian leaned forward. A red laser scanned his left retina.
*BEEP.*
*ACCESS GRANTED. LEVEL ZERO OVERRIDE.*
The hydraulic locks hissed, releasing five hundred pounds of pressurized air as the massive obsidian vault slowly groaned open.
Inside, resting on a pedestal under a beam of sterile ultraviolet light, was a silver cryogenic case marked with the double-headed falcon.
I lunged forward, grabbing the case and popping the latch. Inside lay three ampoules of glowing blue stabilizing enzyme, nestled in sub-zero frost.
"We have it!" Julian called out, checking his tactical chronometer. "Clara, we have nine hours left. If we scramble the helicopter now, we can reach Florence before dawn!"
Suddenly, a loud metallic groan echoed from the ceiling above.
The vault’s emergency blast gates slammed down behind us, sealing Julian, Lucian, and me inside the subterranean chamber.
The master console on the wall flickered to life. A face appeared on the high-definition monitor—not an ally, and not another guard.
It was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun, wearing an antique diamond tiara, holding an ornate walking stick with an emerald serpent head.
*"Well done, Lucian,"* the woman’s icy voice echoed through the vault speakers. *"You brought the mother and the rogue operative directly into the burial chamber."*
Lucian chuckled weakly from the floor, wiping blood from his mouth. "Mother... I told you she would follow the bait."
I froze, my grip tightening on the cryogenic case. "Who are you?"
The old woman smiled—a smile devoid of humanity. *"I am Matriarch Eleanor Castiglione. Lucian was never the master of this house, child. He was merely the puppet. And that ampoule in your hands isn't just a cure. It is an activation key. The moment you inject your son, his true heritage awakens—and his tracking beacon links directly to our global fleet. You have brought him back to us yourself."*
On my wrist communicator, Sarah’s panicked scream cut through the static:
May you like
*"Clara! Clara, help! They're outside the safe-house! Leo just stopped breathing—!"*
The screen went black, and the vault lights turned blood-red.
