Chapter 56 - The Venetian Masquerade

The Grand Canal of Venice shimmered under the velvet black sky of midnight. Gondolas and luxury wooden speedboats glided across the dark waters, delivering high-society guests clad in silk, velvet, and elaborate porcelain masks to the Palazzo de Corvi.

Behind the baroque facade of marble statues and gothic arches, the most corrupt minds of the old world had gathered for the annual Carnivale dei Serpenti.

Beneath an exquisite mask of hammered gold adorned with feathers of a black falcon, I stepped off the mahogany water taxi. Julian stood beside me, immaculate in a bespoke tuxedo, an antique silver mask hiding his scars, though nothing could conceal the lethal precision in his posture.

"Ear-pieces online," Sarah’s voice purred smoothly into our micro-receivers from a chartered yacht anchored two miles out. "Marcus has compromised the Palazzo's auxiliary power grid. When you give the signal, Clara, Venice goes completely dark."

"Copy that," I whispered through the mask.

Julian offered his arm. I took it, and together we ascended the grand marble staircase into the ballroom.

The room was a dizzying spectacle of opulence and depravity. Crystal chandeliers the size of carriages hung from vaulted ceilings painted with frescoes of fallen angels. Billionaires, warlords, and corrupt politicians drank vintage champagne, laughing behind masks that hid their true faces.

At the far end of the ballroom, sitting upon a throne of carved ebony and gold, was Matriarch Eleanor Castiglione.

She was wearing a gown of midnight blue silk, her silver hair crowned with the Castiglione emeralds. At her right side stood Victor Vance, sharp as a razor, surveying the crowd with cold arrogance.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Syndicate," Eleanor’s magnified voice cut through the soft chamber music as she tapped her ornate serpent cane on the dais. The room instantly fell into respectful silence.

"For seven decades, the Castiglione bloodline has ruled the shadows of industry and power. Tonight, we purge the weak branches from our family tree. Lucian is dead in our Mediterranean vault—a failure who could not tame a single mother."

A cruel chuckle rippled through the masked crowd.

"And tonight," Eleanor continued, raising a crystal goblet of red wine, "we crown Victor Vance as the Supreme Arbiter of our family empire. To the bloodline that never bends!"

"To the bloodline!" the guests echoed, raising their glasses.

Before a single drop touched Eleanor’s lips, I broke from the crowd and stepped into the center of the gilded floor.

"A toast to a decaying corpse!" my voice rang out, clear, resonant, and fearless, echoing off the ancient marble arches.
