Chapter 65 - The Blood Covenant

At thirty-five thousand feet above the Mediterranean, the cabin of Countess Beatrice’s Gulfstream was dead silent save for the rhythmic beeping of Leo’s portable heart monitor.

Leo lay propped up on the leather sofa, an oxygen mask over his small face. His fever had broken, but his skin had taken on a pale, translucent quality, the blue veins beneath his temples pulsing with unnatural, rhythmic speed. He looked so frail, so utterly innocent, that the memory of him crawling on bruised knees in Richard's opulent mansion threatened to shatter my composure all over again.

"He's running out of time," Dr. Aris Thorne said, his weathered hands adjusting the intravenous drip. Thorne was an exiled geneticist whom Beatrice had plucked from obscurity in Zurich—a man who had designed the original Chimera blueprints before fleeing the project in horror two decades ago.

"Explain it to me," I demanded, sitting by Leo’s feet, rubbing his cold socks between my hands to keep him warm. "No scientific jargon, Dr. Thorne. Explain to a mother what is happening inside my baby's brain."

Dr. Thorne took off his wire-rimmed glasses, sighing heavily. "The Sterling line was chosen because of Richard’s ancestor, who possessed an unprecedented neural synaptic capacity. But Richard was weak, corrupt, and morally hollow. His sperm alone could not stabilize the Chimera synthetic gene—it would have caused fatal brain hemorrhages within hours of birth."

He looked directly into my eyes. "Then Richard found you. The Vance bloodline possesses a unique mitochondrial enzyme that binds synthetic proteins to organic tissue. Leo is the first and only viable hybrid in thirty years of human experimentation. The Chimera protocol embedded inside his genome isn't just an encryption key, Clara. It is the master root code for the world's automated financial architecture."

"A financial key?" Julian asked, leaning over the table.

"The Project Chimera syndicate doesn't just want to control black markets," Thorne explained grimly. "They have spent thirty years building an encrypted, unhackable shadow banking network called *The Sovereign Ledger*. It holds over four trillion dollars in hidden assets, sovereign bonds, and black-budget weaponry. But to unlock it, the system requires a biological key—a child whose genetic code was mapped into the root encryption at the moment of conception. That child is Leo."

I felt the blood drain from my face. "And when the timer hits zero?"

"The network will send a massive bio-resonant broadcast that triggers complete synaptic alignment. Leo’s individual consciousness will be eradicated. His mind will be turned into an organic, decentralized server node. He will breathe, his heart will beat, but your son will cease to exist."

Tears pricked my eyes, but I swallowed the bitter lump of sorrow, hardening my resolve into diamond. "How do we stop it?"

"We need the Primordial Neutralizer," Thorne answered, pointing to a schematic on the digital tablet. "It’s a molecular counteractant kept exclusively in the bio-vault aboard *The Leviathan*—the syndicate's floating naval fortress stationed in international waters near the Gibraltar Strait."

I looked down at my baby boy. "Then that is where we are going."
