Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Wind

The morning sun cast long, amber rays across the porch of our coastal sanctuary, but the serenity was an illusion. Peace, as I was rapidly learning, was merely the silence between two clashing waves.

Leo was sitting on the wooden deck, humming softly while rolling his small toy sailboat across the painted planks. His knees, once marred by purple bruises and raw scrapes from crawling on Dominic’s polished hardwood floors, were healed now, scarred only by faint, pale lines that served as quiet reminders of what he had endured. Julian was leaning against the kitchen doorway, holding a mug of black coffee, watching Leo with an affectionate warmth that constantly tugged at the guarded corners of my heart.

"He's getting faster," Julian said, his voice low and grounding. "He told me this morning that he's going to build a full-sized schooner and name it *The Lioness*."

A genuine smile touched my lips. "He has big dreams for a boy who couldn't even speak above a whisper six months ago."

"That’s because he knows who his mother is," Julian replied, stepping closer. His eyes softened, searching mine with that steady, unwavering presence that had pulled me out of my darkest hours. "You gave him back his voice, Clara."

Before I could answer, the sharp buzz of my phone vibrated against the marble countertop. It was an unlisted number with a local area code. My chest tightened instinctively. In our world, an unknown caller was rarely good news.

I picked it up and tapped the screen. "Clara Sterling."

"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling," a smooth, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker. It was refined, dripping with an old-money arrogance that sent a chill directly down my spine. "Or should I say, Ms. Vance? Though you will always carry my family's name, whether you like it or not."

My hand gripped the phone until my knuckles turned white. "Who is this?"

"Dominic was an incompetent fool," the voice continued smoothly, ignoring my question. "He was weak, easily seduced by cheap whores, and reckless with family assets. Letting himself get locked away in a federal penitentiary was an embarrassment to our bloodline. But what he left behind... that belongs to me."

Julian noticed the sudden shift in my posture and immediately straightened, setting his coffee down and stepping to my side.

"Identify yourself," I demanded, keeping my voice cold, shielding Leo from the edge in my tone.

"I am Arthur Sterling," the man said with a low, chilling chuckle. "Dominic’s uncle. The head of the board that Dominic pretended to lead. You thought you burned down the Sterling empire, Clara? You merely trimmed the rotten branches. Dominic had no right to sign over family estates, nor does he have the right to keep the sole male heir of our lineage tucked away in a cheap seaside shack."

My breath hitched. "Leo is my son. You will never come near him."

"We shall see," Arthur said, his tone utterly devoid of humanity. "Check your mailbox, Clara. The war hasn't ended. It has only just begun."

The line went dead.

Julian stepped outside immediately, moving swiftly down the long gravel driveway toward the cast-iron mailbox at the entrance of our property. When he returned, his face was carved from granite. In his hand was a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the Sterling signet.

Inside was an emergency petition for custody, backed by an elite consortium of high-powered attorneys, along with photographs taken from long distance.

Photographs of Leo sleeping in his bed. Photographs of Julian carrying groceries. Photographs of me walking Leo down to the beach.

They had been watching us for weeks.

"Pack our things?" Julian asked quietly, though his eyes burned with an icy fury.

I looked back at Leo, who had just managed to balance the wooden mast of his toy ship, looking up at me with a proud, innocent grin.

May you like

"No," I whispered, the protective rage that had decimated Dominic roaring back to life with a vengeance. "We spent two years running. We aren't running anymore. If Arthur Sterling wants a war for my son, I will burn down the rest of his dynasty."
