Chapter 49 - The Siege of the Sovereign

Twenty-four hours remained on the countdown.
A private Gulfstream jet cut through the stormy skies over the Mediterranean, flying low beneath military radar toward the rugged hills of Sicily.
Inside the cabin, Lucian Castiglione was bound to an iron seat, his hands locked in reinforced cuffs. Across the aisle, Julian was on a satellite link with Sarah, who was keeping Leo hidden in a secured safe-house outside Florence.
"Clara," Sarah’s voice came through the encrypted headset, her tone edged with rising panic. "Leo just woke up. His fever spiked to 103. He says his legs hurt so much he can't stand. Clara... the bruising is returning around his joints, spontaneously."
A tear slipped down my cheek, but I wiped it away with the back of a bloody hand. "Keep him cool, Sarah. Administer the painkillers Julian prepared. We are ninety minutes from the compound. Mommy is bringing the cure. Tell him... tell my brave lion to hold on for me."
I ripped the headset off and stepped toward Lucian, who was slowly blinking back to consciousness.
"You built your entire empire on the suffering of children," I whispered, grabbing him by his silk collar. "You poisoned your own offspring just to keep a leash on them."
Lucian coughed, blood staining his white teeth. "Power requires control, Clara. Without that leash, what stops an heir from turning against his father? Look at you. You have fought through two continents, buried a dozen men, and infiltrated high society just for a child. Imagine what Leo will become with that bloodline and that fire."
"He will become a good man," I said with chilling resolve. "Something no Castiglione has ever been."
The jet touched down on a private, darkened airstrip nestled within the olive groves of Palermo.
Outside, a convoy of armored SUVs stood waiting. But they weren't Castiglione’s welcoming committee—they were thirty elite operatives contracted through Julian’s black-budget network, armed to the teeth and awaiting my final command.
"The fortress has thirty-foot stone walls and automated sentry turrets," Julian briefed the strike team on the tarmac. "We breach through the eastern sewer conduit, push through the catacombs, and force Lucian’s retinal scan at Vault Zero. We have eighteen hours before Leo’s vascular collapse becomes irreversible."

I strapped on my tactical vest, checking my magazines one by one.
"No mercy," I said to the men. "Burn the fortress. Secure the enzyme. Bring my son his life."
