Chapter 43 - The Truth in the Ashes

By midnight, our subterranean operations center beneath the sanctuary hummed with the glow of twenty encrypted monitors. Marcus, our intelligence chief, had decrypted the platinum micro-drive found within the locket.
What flickered onto the main wall screen made even Julian’s jaw clench with fury.
It was high-resolution security footage taken four years ago, deep within the private VIP wing of the Sterling estate—the very mansion where Arthur had allowed Brooke to torture my child.
On the screen stood Arthur Sterling, bowing like a groveling dog before an imposing man cloaked in an Italian wool coat. The man held an ornate walking stick tipped with an obsidian falcon.
*"The boy shows weakness, Arthur,"* the cloaked man had spoken with aristocratic disdain. *"A true Castiglione does not crawl. He does not cry. You were given fifty million dollars to forge him into an iron heir. Instead, you let your blonde whore treat him like a stray."*
*"Lord Lucian, I swear to you,"* Arthur’s sniveling voice echoed through the speakers, *"it was Brooke’s doing! The boy has spirit, but his mother—Clara—is returning from Singapore. She’s dangerous. She has resources—"*
*"Then eliminate her,"* the cloaked man replied coldly. *"If she interferes with the reclamation when Leo turns five, slit her throat and dump her body in the harbor. The bloodline is all that matters."*
I stood before the monitor, my arms crossed, my expression an emotionless mask of pure ice.
"Lucian Castiglione," I whispered, committing every angle of the man's aristocratic face, sharp gray eyes, and silver-streaked hair to memory. "The so-called biological sire."
"There is more, Clara," Marcus said, tapping his keyboard. "The Castiglione family controls a private mercenary legion called 'The Black Falcon.' They also hold forty percent of the voting shares in the Mediterranean Maritime Bank. In three days, Lucian Castiglione is hosting the Centurion Gala in Monte Carlo to announce the succession of his dynasty."
"He plans to announce Leo," Julian realized, his fist slamming into the desk. "He intends to take Leo before the gala and present him to the European nobility as the hidden heir of the House of Castiglione, cementing his claim over the rival branches of his family."
"Over my dead body," I said, turning to Julian. "Pack our gear. We aren't going to sit here in this bunker waiting for their assassins to breach our gates."

Julian looked at me, a wolfish smirk touching his lips. "You want to take the fight to Monaco?"
"They think a mother’s love is a fragile weakness," I replied, grabbing my secure satchel. "It’s time to teach the House of Castiglione that a lioness doesn't run from wolves—she hunts them down in their own den."
